Justification Statement
The tree, a deodar cedar as confirmed by an arborist, is in the right side yard of our property. The trunk of the tree, at 4.5 feet from grade, is 30 inches in diameter. The size of
the tree has outgrown our small backyard. There used to be a concrete patio pad around the base of the tree but was removed because the tree roots had raised the pad to an uneven and
dangerous level. The concrete path, next to the house, is now showing signs of unevenness because of invading roots.
A significant number of branches, from the section of the tree over the neighboring property (18631 Barnhart), had been cut off. Its roots had also been substantially cut back as the
neighbor is building a new house. This imbalance compromises the tree’s structural balance and presents a potentially dangerous situation.
We will be looking at a major renovation (like what the neighbor is building) in the next 4-5 years. This would include expanding upward and outward into the side yard where the cedar
tree currently stands.
