TR-2020-024 Arborist Report Recommended Replacements Com m - ynin Development Department Plang Division — Cupertino CUPERTINO APPROVED 3/24/2021 Case# TR-2020-024 Application Number(s) Stonebridge HOA Approva I Body' ve Director/Staff StensdCNr lffd Old Oak Way Approva I Date Signature CUPWA"44MM Case Manager To: City of Cupertino Planning Dept. I have inspected the Stonebridge site both from above and below. I estimate the urban tree canopy to be 80 to 82% coverage. This is relatively high for an HOA located in an urban setting. do not believe that planting any additional Aleppo pine trees would benefit the Stonebridge HOA at this time. The Aleppo pine is a large tree with a large canopy. Planting small to medium trees to supplement the existing landscape would allow for a multi storied canopy, with diversity, better aesthetics and a healthier landscape. It would also allow the existing trees to mature with less pruning and less stress which occurs from pruning. In addition, with such a dense tree canopy it makes it difficult to maintain the understory landscape. The canopies shade out the shrubs underneath which then require additional disease and pest control and fertilization. Pruning could remedy the situation but would have to be done annually to be effective and as mentioned above would causes unnecessary stress to the trees. For the reasons mentioned above I am recommending not to replace the Aleppo pines with the same species. Respectfully, Paul West Certified Arborist W E-3760A
