The site was visited on Wednesday June 23, 2021. Assignment: Review two Callery Pear trees growing at Bandley 8, BA08, 10385 Bandley Drive. The trees are located directly adjacent to an existing sewer line that will be replaced. The work to be done is under building permit number BLD-2021-0901. The assignment requires the following activities: visit the site, verify the trees, list the tree species, diameters, crown radius, condition of the trees, impacts to the property, and mitigation options. Observations: The site was visited on Wednesday, June 23, 2021 at about 11:00 am. The trees were not tagged with numbers, though Treeplotter was used for identification and history. The tools used were a diameter tape, screwdriver as a probe, hammer, nails, zip ties and tree tags. Crown height and radius were estimated. Two trees listed on the map were measured for trunk diameter at approximately 4.5 feet above grade with a diameter tape. Trees were assessed and rated for health and structure, and overall condition considering branch structure, decay, leaf quality, vitality, dieback, lean, and other issues that affect the condition of the trees. The tree health condition rating was determined by observing the tree foliage, twig growth, leaf density, and dead branches. The structure rating was determined by observing branch attachment, crotch structure, trunk flare, surface roots, decay, insects and diseases, growth habit, and any physical damages. The overall condition combines the health and the structure ratings, based on the most significant conditions present. The rating system used for both health, structure, and overall condition is: (0) 0% dead; (1) 1-20% very poor/severe decline; (2) 21-40%poor/declining; (3) 41-60% fair; (4) 61-80% good; and (5) 81-100% excellent. Discussion:The property is Bandley 8 (BA08) 10385 Bandley Road, Cupertino, CA 95014. The two trees assessed are located on the East facade of the property facing Bandley Road. The two pear trees are located within the footprint of a proposed sewer line renovation/replacement. Conclusion: The two pear trees will not likely survive the construction impacts. It is our belief that these should be removed. Sewer line replacement necessitates the removal of the two pear trees. Please see attached building plan showing proposed impacts in relation to tree's location. Mitigation: Plant two 24" box Crape Myrtle trees to mitigate for the loss of the two removed Evergreen Pear trees. Callery pears are not suitable species they have fallen out of favor as an urban tree for fire blight, mistletoe, problematic structurally (tend to break), market availability is low as they are known to be a problematic species and it's cultivars. We are using Crape Myrtles to be consistent with the design intent of the site. Planning on replacing in same location with a Crape Myrtle tree that is smaller and not as aggressive roots, the new sewer line will be modern ABS pipe and be less prone to leaking and root invasion.
