EDC 04-20-05 City of Cupertino Economic Development Committee Regular Meeting April 20, 2005 1. CALL TO ORDER At 9: 1 0 a.m. Carol Atwood called the meeting to order at Cupertino City Hall, Conference Room A, 10300 Torre A venue, Cupertino. 2. ROLL CALL City Staff: Carol Atwood, David Knapp, Steve Piasecki, Ralph Qualls Chamber: Christine Giusiana, Mark McKenna, Shawna Holmes Absent: Sandra James, Richard Lowenthal, Jack Hubby Guests: Peter Pau, Marty Miller, Gilbert Wong, Rachelle Kawn 3. NEW BUSINESS A. The Oaks Update Peter Pau gave the committee an update on The Oaks shopping center. He stated that the center has great potential if a complete overhaul is done. He stated that the courtyard concept is not functionally operational, the size is too small for a major center, but too big for a small strip mall, and parking, circulation and low lying roof lines are also a challenge. He indicated that his preference is for retail with strong tenants. He is looking at the possibility of discontinuing some leases of properties that do not compliment the other tenants. Peter suggested that the City needs to give retailers the impression that Cupertino wants them here. He indicated that other cities are actively recruiting retail businesses. Carol Atwood distributed a summary of local retail trends. B. Chamber Survey - Why Businesses Leave Cupertino Christine Giusiana will incorporate into the Chambers workplan. C. Promote Available Meeting Spaces in Cupertino The item was deferred to the next meeting. D. Retail Use to Non-Taxable Use The item was deferred to the next meeting. MISCELLANEOUS COMMITTEE UPDATES Carol Atwood requested that the committee review the Economic Development Plan and forward any comments to her. 6. ADJOURNMENT The meeting was adjourned at 10:30 a.m.
