SUMMARY
Agenda Item No: c¡
Meeting Date: April 4, 2006
SUBJECT AND ISSUE
Authorize recruitment of a part-time Disaster Preparedness position to assist with the existing
training courses, outreach and volunteer management.
BACKGROUND
Our current Disaster Preparedness Coordinator, Marsha Hovey, provides sole coordination of our
outreach efforts in this area and manages volunteers for neighborhood preparedness, CERT,
CARES, EOC drills and school preparedness. These outreach efforts have resulted in the
program expansion over the past five years as follows:
· Four CERT classes offered per year (720 total graduates)
· Three Kaleidoscope classes (268 total graduates)
· Ten organized neighborhoods
· Seventy-seven CARES volunteers
The success of Marsha's efforts has grown this program beyond what one person can handle. To
keep this outreach effective and provide efficient staffing, backup and volunteer management,
staff is proposing recruitment of a part-time Disaster Preparedness position,
FISCAL IMPACT
This proposal will increase General Fund expenditures by $27,000 per year.
RECOMMENDA nON
