The Central Fire District is not opposed to the proposed use of land. A
development of this size will require considerable time to calculate required
fire flows, size mains, and hydrant ;cations. Because of its size, this
development should be equipped w-;th a fully supervised, built'in fire protection
system.
We will reserve additional comments regarding access and water supply until
we receive the ASA application or a more detailed set of Flans.

Dear Mr. Sisk:
This is in reply to your letter of December 8, 1972 requesting our
comments on Mariani Mall, a proposed shopping center to be
located on the east side of Saratogga-Sunnyvale Road and extending
about 2600 feet south from Route 280.
We are now processing a Cooperative Agreement with the City of
Cupertino covEring the improvement of Saratoga-Sunnyvale Road
between Stevens Creek Boulevard and Route 280 prior to relinquish-
ment to the City. The engineering and contract administration
will be done by the City in conjunction with the proposed Cross-
roads Assessment District Unit 2 project which is scheduled for
construction in Spring 1973•
The Mariam Mall plan shows a proposed median on 3aretods-3unnyvale
Road which would out oft the left turn movement to Valley Green
Drive. The proposed Crossroads Assessment District Unit 2 provides
for this left turn.
The proposed access road along the east side of Mariam Mall is
shown crossing over Route 280. This freeway crossing does not
exist at present, and vould require approval by the California
Highway Commission.
Thank you for submltt. ng this proposed development for our review.

Dear Mr. Sisk:
Reference is made to the use permit application for Mariani Mail, File No.
21-U-72, sent to us for review.
At present, the site's northerly property line is adjacent to our Junipero Serra
Channel right of way. However, it is our understanding that the State Division
of Highways is planning a "diamond" interchange at Route 280 and Highway 85
which will require the channel to be realigned as shown on the enclosed plan.
The necessary right of way shown is based on preliminary State plans and is
only approximate. Sufficient right of way for a 30-by-30-foot maintenance
turnaround at Highway 85 or access to our maintenance road from the parking
area perimeter road will also be required.
No permanent structures and trees are to be placed within 15 feet of the "pro-
Posed" right of way as shown until the channel relocation work is completed.
Site grading and improvement plans, inclusive of details for any storm drain
outfalls into the channel, are to be sent for our approval and issuance of the
necessary permit. Any proposed site grading that is to be done adjacent to
our right of way must conform with the enclosed grading detail.
Please direct any further questions to Mr. Eugene Sullivan at extension 257.

Dear Mr. Quinlan:
As we had indicated to you sometime ago, we feel very strongly
S that the "Mariana Site'' is the very most viable location for a
regional shopping center in Cupertino, and we feel most confident
that the economic and traffic studies of theCity will bear this
out. We did not choose this site until very careful investigation
of the aspects that are now being investigated by the City and,
In addition, the department stores that wish to be represented
in this market area have also extensively investigated this and
other available sites.
As a result, we are able to confirm to you in writing at this time
the express preference of rederated Department Stores, Inc.
to locate a Bullocks Department Store within a regional shopping
center to be developed 1,y us on the Mariana property. The original
of said totter is attached herewith for your Information and further

You have in your possession a similar letter which you have
received earlier from Macy's, and we have been advised that the
