Overview of Yogathon

•Initiative of Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS)
•Preserve, practice and promote Hindu ideals and values of Universal Peace and
oneness.
•Started in 1989, presence across USA, 32 chapters in SF Bay Area
•Yogathon initiated in 2006, conducted every January for 16 days
•Targeted to create awareness about benefits of Yoga
•Theme is “Yoga for Health, Health for Humanity”
•Uses Yoga exercise called Sun Salutation or Surya Namaskar
•Also referred to as Sun Salutation Yogathon or Surya Namaskar Yajna (SNY)
•Participation across 40 states, thousands of people join in performing millions of

Sun Salutation (Surya Namaskar)

•Set of simple body postures with associated
breathing technique
•Each Sun Salutation comprises of 10 steps,
has 8 unique postures
•13 Sun Salutations makes up 1 Set
•Provides workout for the entire body
•Ideally done early morning, on an empty
stomach, facing the Sun

Unique Aspects
•Simple to learn and practice
•Does not require lot of space or any equipments
•Does not require lot of time (1 Set in < 8 mins.)
•Gentle on the body
Precautions
•Listen to your body
•Don’t overexert
•Increase counts gradually
•Perform on empty stomach
•Avoid if you have special conditions
•Pregnancy (esp. after first trimester)
•Prior medical conditions like issues of spine, vertigo
