The City of Cupertino is a suburban community interested in providing a mixture of commercial, industrial and residential land uses which reside together. The purpose of the Sign Ordinance is to identify and enhance businesses while: maintaining the aesthetic appearance of the City. B. A sign is recognized as a vital ingredient in the free trade process upon which the City is dependent. The number of tenant names on a multi -tenant ground sign is limited to five (5). Each tenant name shall not be less than six (6) inches in height with a minimum of a four (4) inch space between tenant names. Street address numbers shall be a minimum of five (5) inches high as required by Section 16.04.050 of the Cupertino Xtunicipal Code. 17.24.200 Design Criteria Although the aesthetic appearance of signs is subjective, the City recognizes that certain basic design guidelines are needed in order to maintain the City's high quality appearance. The following criteria shall be incorporated into the design of signs. A. Ground signs shall be either housed in a frame or set onto a base, presenting a solid, attractive, well proportioned and balanced appearance. The size and shape of the frame or base shall be proportionate to the size and weight of the sign. Low signs are generally more appropriate on a base, whereas taller signs are generally more appropriate in a frame. B. Ground signs shall be located within a landscaped area proportionate to the size of the sign. Appropriate landscaping should be placed at the base of the sign. C. Each sign shall be compatible and compliment the architectural style of the building with which it is principally associated, by incorporating its colors, materials, shape and design. The sign shall also be compatible with the aesthetic character of the surrounding developments and neighborhood. D. Background panels should be dafk-er consistent In muted colors. Action The Director of Community Development referred the application to ASAC for review. ASAC recommended approval subject to screening the LP dispenser and the west building elevation with landscaping. The Director of Community Development deemed the modifications minor with the following conditions.
