General Notes:
Overall Tree Conditions
• Canopy: While the tree has a relatively full canopy, epicormic growth on the major limbs is a potential sign of
stress in the tree.
• Trunk: There is a large crack running through the trunk where the two major limbs meet. While there are multiple
surface cracks in the bark that are typical of eucalyptus, this crack appears to be deeper in the wood of the tree.
Roots
• Lifting: Lifting of the surrounding soil and stones is clearly present in the area, as the tree has grown to a major
size so has its roots.
• Basal Rot: Rot is present at the base of the tree on the building facing side. Worms and other insects are
present under the bark in this area and wood is clearly deteriorating.
Soil/Growing Environment
• Poorly Drained: Poor drainage in the area on the building facing side of the tree has likely contributed to the rot
as water has been able to pool there, as oppose to the park facing side which is on the slope.
• Girdling: With a limited growing area, some of the larger roots appear to be girdling other major roots, if not the
tree itself. This will only continue as the tree grows.

General Notes:
Overall Tree Conditions
• Trunk: On the building facing side of the trunk, extensive fungus was found growing out of the tree, a clear sign
of internal decay taking place. While the fruiting bodies are not always present, the fact that they were there at
time of inspection confirms their presence.
• Canopy: While the canopy is green and healthy, the structure of the canopy has multiple large limbs overhanging
both the walkway and the residence. If a major limb were to fail it would almost definitely fall either in a walkway
area or on a residence.
Roots
• Small Growing Area: Roots are growing in a small area that is raised and surrounded by concrete. As roots are
likely going below the concrete to continue and spread, this could lead to future damage.
• Utility Damage: Roots could be in conflict with underground utilities; gas and sewer lines may be compromised.
Soil/Growing Environment
• Ivy: The presence of ivy all throughout the growing area means that a lot of moisture is retained around the base
of the tree. With leaves shading out the soil, it takes longer for water to evaporate and as such it can sit on the
tree for longer. This could have contributed to the fungal outbreak present.

General Notes:
Overall Tree Conditions
• Canopy: Tree's canopy is overall green and healthy, however there is some dieback that can be seen at branch
tips. More importantly, the major branch junction has some included bark which is a structural defect and can
lead to limb failure.
• Trunk: As mentioned above included bark is found at the main branch junction. The tree trunk is also incredibly
close to the residence with the trunk only about a foot away from the building.
Roots
• Basal Rot: On the side of the tree closest to the building, fungus and insect life can be found on the base of the
tree, decomposing wood. This decay is very concerning because as more and more of the tree decays the
structural integrity of the tree becomes worse and worse making a failure more likely.
Soil/Growing Environment
• Ivy: Similar to Eucalpytus (65), the presence of ivy in the growing area means that a lot of moisture is retained
around the base of the tree. With leaves shading out the soil, it takes longer for water to evaporate and as such it
can sit on the tree for longer. This could have contributed to the fungal outbreak present.
• Small Growing Area: Growing area is small for a tree of this size surrounded by concrete and building
foundations. Could eventually lead to concrete, plumbing, or other damage caused by roots.

Overall Tree Conditions:
• Canopy: Some dieback present, also some heavy limbs, more importantly though there is included bark at a
major heavy limb that overhangs the residence.
• Trunk: While the trunk itself is fine, as mentioned above the first major branch junction has a lot of included bark
and overhangs a residence, posing a major hazard to whomever lives in the building.
Roots
• Girdling: A root that is circling part of the trunk can slowly cut off the tree's vascular system as it squeezes the
trunk, slowly growing over time and causing more damage as it grows. It has likely been growing this way since it
was planted.
• Basal Rot: Fungus found at the base of the tree is a sign of rot that can damage the structural integrity of the tree
Soil/Growing Environment
• Wood Chips/Piling: Wood chips are found in the planting area and while these are typically not a problem for
trees and can be a good way to retain moisture in the soil, there is a bit of piling of wood chips around the base of
the tree. This can hold moisture against the base of the tree for too long and could have contributed to fungal
activity.

even some girdling can restrict the vascular system of the tree.
Soil/Growing Environment
• Small Planting Area: In a small planting strip such as this between the building and the fountain, as the roots
grow they can damage the foundation of the building as well as utilities such as plumbing. Similar to eucalyptus

of the tree with some decay in these cavities. A more clear sign of decline however is the epicormics growth that
can be found on the trunk of the tree, a sign that the tree is under stress
• Canopy: Similar to the trunk, numerous cavities can be found on the branches of this tree. Furthermore, there is
extensive dieback in the canopy of the tree, likely correlated to the epicormic growth that can be found on the tree
Roots
• Basal Growth: Just as epicormic growth can be found on the trunk and canopy of the tree, it is also present at
the base of the tree. So much growth of this nature is an indicator the plant is under severe stress and in decline
Soil/Growing Environment
• Small Planting Area: The planting area for this tree is quite small, and with so much of the drip zone covered in
concrete, the lack of growing space may be contributing to the trees decline.

indicator that the tree is stressed and in severe decline. Due to the poor conditions of this tree and the hazard it
poses with limbs overhanging the pool area, the removal and replacement with a more conducive species is the
best choice. Please contact me with any further questions or concerns.

acing the removed eucalyptus trees with more eucalyptus, we have opted
and Quercus parvula `shreve oak'. We did not want to replant with
Approval Die eLWiW9 for a number of reasons. Primarily, a lot of the hazards that the current
Signature eucp+wt%ire posing to the surrounding residents and structures would likely come up again
aS the aye ger These rees can grow to be incredible sizes, and with planting
areas that are right up against buildings, as is the case with all the current eucalyptus, it does
not make sense to replant with such a large species. As such, we opted for Acer rubrum and
Quercus parvula, two species that do not pose those challenges. Both species do not grow
nearly as tall as eucalyptus or have limbs that get as heavy. Therefore, they can grow up
against these buildings and not pose as big of a risk if a limb breaks and falls. Furthermore,
replanting with these two species provides both deciduous and evergreen trees to the property.
Acer rubrum has a beautiful fall leaf coloration, and would add to the overall aesthetics of the
property. Quercus parvula is green all year long, ensuring that not all the trees will be barren in
winter. Additionally, there are already multiple Acer rubrum planting on the property, so these
trees would add to this already existing population on site. Overall replanting with eucalyptus is
ill advised as it would lead to problems in the future, while Acer rubrum and Quercus parvula are
excellent replacements as they do not pose the same hazard risks and improves the overall
landscape aesthetics.
The olive trees that are to be removed will be replaced with Betula nigra instead of more
olive for a few reasons. First, the olives are doing poorly where they are planted. Multiple limbs
are in decline and overall the trees do not look good. As such, if we planted more olive trees,
the same health issues would likely come up again as the trees mature. Furthermore, these
trees are messy when they drop fruit, so replanting with a species that does not produce fruit
will help with maintaining the property. As such, we have choses Betula nigra to replant with.
With other birch trees already growing on the property, these trees make a great addition to the
species makeup on site. Additionally, the other birch trees growing on site are vigorous and
healthy, suggesting that these birch will also do well. These trees also do not produce fruit, so
maintaining the area where they grow will be much easier that with more olives. With all this in
mind, we believe it best to replace the olive trees with Betula nigra instead of more olives as it
will be more beneficial to the landscape and residents in the long term.
