BACKGROUND
Site Observation
Quercus agrifolia, — 47' high with a DBH measuring 36", California live oak has excessive
dieback throughout canopy due to Phytophthora ramorum (Sudden Oak Death, wilting new
shoots, older leaves turning pale green cankered base foliage turning brown and dark brown
sap on the lower trunk's bark. This condition is affecting the health of the tree since cambium
layer has been detrimented due to the disease. Limb failure as large limbs have broken and
have fallen close to the structure. This is a hazardous situation and needs immediate attention
before damage and/or safety is compromised. The tree is in eminent danger of failure and can
fall at any time.
SPECIES PROFILE
Quercus agrifolia, the California live oaOl or coast live oak, is a highly variable, often shrubby
evergreen oak tree, a type of live oak, native to the California Floristic Province. It grows west of
the Sierra Nevada mountain range from Mendocino County, California, south to northern Baja
California in Mexico.(4) It is classified in the red oak section of oaks (Quercus sect. Lobatae).(51
This species is commonly sympatric with canyon live oak (Q. chrysolepis), and the two may be
hard to distinguish because their spinose leaves are superficially similar.
SPECIES CHARACTERISTICS
Coast live oak typically has a much -branched trunk and reaches a mature height of 10-25
meters (33-82 ft). Some specimens may attain an age exceeding 250 years, with trunk
diameters up to three or four meters (10 or 13 ft), such as those on the Filoli estate in San
Mateo County.(s)(6)
The trunk, particularly for older individuals, may be highly contorted, massive and gnarled. The
crown is broadly rounded and dense, especially when ag NWK6AON4i 0 ffigrh bepartment
