SUBJECT: ARBORIST REPORT FOR PROPERTY AT 1 Apple Park Way, Cupertino,
CA 95014
Wood Architecture has been retained to prepare an arborist letter for the commercial
property at 1 Apple Park Way in Cupertino, CA. This letter documents the necessity to
remove one (1) Pinus radiata (Monterey Pine) to reduce tree -related safety risks. The
aforementioned tree was inspected on March 2, 2020. The inspection revealed substantial
decay at the root crown and lower trunk area. The tree is large and has multiple targets in
the fall area.
The Pine tree is 50 inches in diameter at 4.5 feet above grade, 65 feet in height and 45 feet
wide. It is located along the Tantau frontage of Apple Park approximately 300 feet north of
the Apple Park Tantau Reception Center between the sidewalk and the security fence. The
tree is alive but exhibits poor vitality. There is significant decay on the south side of the
tree's root crown and lower trunk that extends more than half way around the tree. The
decay is concentrated on the compression side of the tree. The cambium is in a large area on
the lower trunk and the bark is sloughing off.
Pinus radiata are poor compartmentalizers and the decay will continue to spread fairly
rapidly until the structure of the wood is compromised to the point that a catastrophic
failure will occur. There is no way to predict exactly when the failure will occur however
based on the inspection findings it is possible that the tree could fail in the very near future.
Monterey pines are currently the second most commonly reported species in the California
Tree Failure Report Program database as the occurrence of failures are high. It is
recommended that this tree be removed without hesitation.
Replacements
We understand the Monterey Pine is considered as a protected tree pursuant to Section
14.18.035 of the City of Cupertino's Municipal Code. However, it is lawful to remove a
failing tree pursuant to Section 14.18 of the City of Cupertino's Municipal Code and ask for
permission to proceed with the removal and replacement.
To mitigate the removal, we propose to replace it with a 36-inch box Quercus spp. (species
to be determined by the Apple Arborist) in the same location as the removal and evenly
spaced for maturity. The new tree will be selected by an Apple arborist to ensure optimal
