Dear Board of Directors,
Problem
Podocarpus macrophylla trees damaging concrete walkway and steps.
Observations
Podocarpus are planted 2' - 3' from building foundations, sidewalks, and steps.
Podocarpus have outgrown their space.
Podocarpus root flare and roots are displacing sidewalks and steps.
Unbalanced crowns are a result of side pruning one side for building clearance.
Discussion
Replacing concrete walkways and steps would require pruning the roots.
Root pruning would be close to the trunk which may compromise anchorage.
The planting of the Podocarpus so close to the hardscape and buildings leads me to believe that
the intent of the designer was to maintain these podocarpus as shrubs not trees.
Conclusion
The roots and root flare of the podocarpus have displaced concrete walks and steps which pose
a trip hazard to the public.
It is too late for any remedial work to correct the problem.
Recommendation
Remove Podocarpus and replace with a shrub not a large tree.
RESPECTFULLY SUBMITTED,
WC-5728A Warren Nakamura
