LOCATION: NORTHWEST CORNER OF DE ANZA BOULEVARD AND STEVENS

Requesting approval of grouting for the exterior walls for two existing office buildings.
DISCUSSION:
A. Applicant proposes to apply a gray grout between the bricks on the building fascade.
Applicant states that the grout is necessary to secure bricks to the building and to provide
additional moisture protection.
B. Staff and ASAC conclude that the grout will eliminate all surface relief from the building's
already austere exterior. ASAC determined that improvements must be made to the building
to mitigate the impact of the grouting.
C. As the Council may recall, Apple Computer received approval last year for voluntary
modifications to the building which included second floor balcony planters, awnings, blue
screen walls and bench -height railings (see Exhibit B-1 (Apple Computer)). The ASAC
resolution contains a condition requiring installation of the awnings and balcony planters in
conjunction with this application as mitigation measures.
D. Apple plans to install the awnings and planter improvements but their efforts are voluntary.
Staff believes it to the City's advantage to require improvements as a condition of approval.
Applicant has expressed concern with the mitigation requirement; they do not wish to be held
responsible for implementing the improvements.
RECOMMENDATION:
The Architectural and Site approval Committee recommends approval of Application ASAC 4-U-
