SUMMARY MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE ARCHITECTURAL AND
SITE APPROVAL COMMITTEE OF THE CITY OF CUPERTINO FOR MAY 8, 1989.
MEETING HELD IN CONFERENCE ROOM A, CITY HALL, AT 10300 TORRE AVENUE,
CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA
The meeting was called to order at 7:30 PM by Chairman Miller

FORMAL REVIEW
ITEM 1) APPLICATION ASAC 3-U-89 IMWALLE/STEGNER Requesting
informal review of a use permit to construct a 5000 sq.ft. multi -
tenant retail building on the Southeast corner of Homestead Rd. and
Blaney Ave.
® Richard Fish, Bruce Hill, and Rich Schaffer represented
Imwalle/Stegner Development. All Three discused and answered
questions regarding the architecture landscaping and lighting of
the proposed development.
ISSUES:
- There was a general concern among the commissioners with the
lack of a horizontal element and feature on the south elevation.
Betty Mann proposed the two relief arches on the north elevation
be duplicated on the south elevation joined by a hoizontal reveal.
- There was concern with the height of landscaping along the
south elevation between the glass elements.
DECISION:
On a 4-0 vote, ASAC 3-U-89 was approved per the findings and
conditions contained within the model resolution, with condition 10
a) modified and conditions 11 and 12 added to read as follows:
10 a) Shrubery provided on south elevation should be replaced by
low groundcover in front of spandrel glazing only.
® 11) Relief arches, duplicating the north elevation arches, shall be
placed on the south elevation.

12) Turf areas may be replaced by other groundcovers as
approved by staff. 1
ITEM 2) APPLICATION ASAC 51.848.1 - P. J. MULLIGANS Requesting
approval to modify a wall mounted sign for an existing shopping
center located at the northeast corner of Blaney Avenue and
Stevens Creek Boulevard.
Dale Meyer, project architect, described and answered questions
regarding the proposed sign.
ISSUES:
Sign does not meet the requirements of the sign ordinance.
DECISION:
Applicant requested and was granted a continuance:
ITEM 3) APPLICATION ASAC 51,842.1 - W .STFI .T,p INC,(VA T CO
FASHION PARK) Requesting approval to modify a Planned
Development Sign Program and adding neon accents to a bridge
overcrossing for a regional shopping center located on Wolfe Road
between the 280 freeway and Stevens Creek Boulevard.
Terry Ferrera and John Enilott Representing Westfield and Chuck
Hesse, project architect described and answered questions regarding
the pylon sign and the neon accent on the bridge. Chuck Hesse
demonstrated that the pylon sign was the minimum size to safely
identify Vallco Fashion Park from the freeway. John Enilott and
Terry Ferrera demonstrated their need for a freeway oriented
identification sign.
ISSUES:
- Approval for a freeway orl ented signs is contradictory to ASAC
policy.
- The application was split for separate decisions for the neon
accents and the pylon sign. The applications numbers are
51,847.1 and 51,847.2 respectively.
DECISION:
On a 4-0 vote, ASAC 51,847A was approved per the findings and
conditions contained within thel model resolution, with condition 9 a)
modified to read as follows:
9) The approval is based upon Exhibits 4 and 5 dated march 16, 1989
of application ASAC-51,847.1 except as may be amended by
conditions 'enumerated herein.
On a 4-0 vote, ASAC 51,841.2 was denied per the findings and
conditions contained within the model resolution.

NEW BUSINESS
ITEM 4) M 1RALS ON PRIVATE BUILDINGS Discussion of encouraging
murals on new private development within Cupertino. (Requested by
Betty Mann)
DISCUSSION:
Betty Mann described her ideas of the benefits of murals on private
buildings. Larry Hermer led a discussion on the types of murals and
problems associated with the city allowing them.
CONSENSUS:
Staff will return in one month with a report on private buildings.

ITEM 5) Minutes of the regular meeting of April 24, 1989
On a 3-0 vote the minutes of the regular meeting of April 24, 1989
were approved with Betty Mann abstaining.
,ADJOURNMENT
Adjournment to the next regular meeting of the Architectural and Site
® Approval Committee to be held May 22, 1989, at 7:30 PM in Conference Room A
of City Hall, 10300 Torre Avenue.
