This letter documents the necessity to remove one (1) dead Scinus molle (Peruvian Pepper Tree) located in the courtyard at 10500 N. De Anza Boulevard. Please see Exhibit 1.1 for the relative location of the subject tree indicated as a red dot, and for the location of the replacement tree. Metrics for the dead tree is found in the following table: The tree was determined to be dead (see Exhibits 1.2) due to its extensive loss of foliage, severely desiccated limbs, and lack of any green growth. The trunk had several large pockets of visible decay. Immediate removal is recommended. A live pepper tree should have a lush, green crown with an abundance of foliage. Replacements We ask that the identified dead tree be granted exemption pursuant to Section 14.18 of the City of Cupertino's Municipal Code, and ask for your permission to proceed with the removal and replacement per this document. To mitigate the removal, we are planning to replace with one (1) 36-inch box Quercus spp. or equivalent drought tolerant tree species, pending availability of highest quality stock in tree nurseries per ordinance mitigation requirements in the same location as the removal. The species determined by the Apple Arborist. Replacement tree species will be selected for favorable characteristics whenever possible such as drought tolerance, long lifespan, structurally sound, deep-rooted, Cupertino climate -appropriate, onsite location - appropriate, shading value, pest resistance and overall enhanced aesthetics. The new tree will be selected by an Apple arborist to ensure optimal structure, health, and reduce the risk of girdling roots, and then trained from an early age as needed to optimize branching structure which will extend the aesthetically and structurally sound lifespan of the trees. Conclusion Our concern is that the property is a commercial space that has an abundance of employees occupying the area at any given time, resulting in an elevated target value. Given that the tree is dead, contributing to an elevated probability of failure, and the resulting increased risk of a tree falling into the drive aisle, we think it has a very high tree failure risk and should be removed and replaced immediately. Again, the tree listed above has been identified as a candidate for immediate removal because it is dead and poses an increased likelihood of failure. 2337 AMERICAN AVE, HAYWARD, CA 94545 OFFICE: (888) 969-8733 1993 EAST BAYSHORE ROAD, REDWOOD CITY, CA 94063 CELL: (925-518-2028 SOAKLEY@ARBORWELL.COM Community Development Department Planning Division — Cupertino Arbor ell.
