MINUTES OF THE APRIL 5, 1972 H-CONTROL MEETING
The Chairman noted the applicant's future plans call for the
d' in 1975. The 'Location of buil& _
permanen building P
ing dill influence the, Com.ittee4s action on the te-in,porar y buildin
It was noted by the staff that this te-umporary building. - wi-2 n . ave
a foundation and will. meet all the building codes. He said the
City Attorney advised that approval of this applipation could be
conditioned to a certain point in t ii7i e .
Mr. Bob Manning, 2206 Loma Vista Street, Pasadena, tepresenting'
Home Savings and Loan Association, said this is essentially a
wood frame'' building with an exterior-'fj-'nish of textured plywood, 1,
solar glass, and brick that looks like slump 'stone.- The roof
element is continuous around the building. It is of anodized
aluminum'which is painted to look like tile.' The air conditioning
units w*111 be contained in. an extension of about. 2 f eet of, the
wall,'to'be'located_within the confines of the building. The"
planters in front are optional. They probably would prefe't to
omit them, but the railing would remain. He said the brick -is
remarkably realistic; they even grout 4ta

Meniber-Sall4n'asked for a description of the` landscaping. Landscaping`
-D
Mr. Manning said their plan is to extend the same planting and parking' lot
materials as originally proposed. Member Sallan said she does
riot like to see cars in the parking lots right up to -the street,~
She would prefer to have the building core up closer. She asked
if there would be some means of putting evergreen trees of some
type every so often in theiparking areaMr. Mannin- said `they
could =do this, but he would prefer not to because they would only,
be torn up in a few years in order to build the permanent building
Member Sallan was concerned about the visual impact of the parking"
lot. She would like to see some greenery along the'area where
going. Mr. Mannino- said this':is plan ed.
BAftdley Avenue is go n
Further', Member Sallan said she would like to see'sone trees'"
and% or' 'some 'kind of landscaped barrier along the northerly"':
boundary. Mr. Manning said they have a n, ininiu-m stall' width and
minimum aisle, so this would be difficult to accomplish.. If they
eliminate two parking spaces they could put in th'LS landscaping'.
He added that this would -probably be lost atthetime of devb1op'p-
ment"of the adjacent property. There is a 25-foot ease-inent"to
the rear property.
Mr. Manning 'answered Member Gatto that there is not sufficient
room to drive between the temporary and future buildings.

:MINUTES OF THE APRIL 5, 1972 Fi-CONTROL MEETING
+Member Gatto asked the applicant how he. arrived of the required
number of parking spaces. Mr. Mannin5 said the '44 parking. spaces
4were based on their past experiences. He h sitate to give up
any of them. 'The; do riot anticipate a drive -through type operation
bin their permanent building. He adde• that Bank of America, next
door, has 47 parking spaces.
Meiaber Sall -an noted the area to the rear of the building, facing the
MBank of America, shows no landscaping. Mr. Manning said parking is
intended for this area. Men, bar S,alIan wanted to know the growth
[pattern of the plants planned for the area closest to Stevens Creek
11 Blvd. If they are slow -growing they won't provice much of a cover-up
Viand perhaps they should consider alternatives. J..1r. Manning said they
jwant to keep the plants at 3 to 4 feet so the ground sign can be seen.
:He would be willing to change plant ._:sterials as long as they hide
;the cars but not the building.
Member Gatto co:ninented that there i _ :nuc-. too great a number of cars
allowed for this site. lie feels tier= is a poential traffic hazard
?with the entrance/exit situation on Stevens Creek 31vd., besice that
of the Bank of America. lie suggestea one -way -in from Stevens Creek
E Bl1:,d. , 60' parking along Stevens Creep-. Blvd. portion of the lot
because 600 parking dces not require a_ 29--foot aisle, so they could
pull the building in somew'~iat and provide more landscaping.
`ie-,Der Catro said there is some worry about the people getting out
of their cars and ,-al%ing to the. building.
s
Member Sargent was very concerned a'--o.it ingress/ep-ress from Stevens
Creek Blvd. and about the narking 'acing Stevens Creek Blvd. He
was concerned about the traffic flc:j in general.
A lengthy discussion followed, with tine CO_.mittee helping the
applicant to revise the paring lavoat.
s.
Member Gatto said he would like to see samples of the proposed building
materials. H= said planter bo..es _4 t:he entrance would be good because
i cb,2re is very l;_ttle transition of el vation. Sargent would
!like to see a i=-type tree in that area where .e planters would have
'gone. He suggested using the same `ype tree as t!:at i.n the parking lot.
j.-iember Gatto fait that the iyrong t e n1..nts ar planned for the area
up against the building. ite also f,`_t tiere be a better
integration of '_he plants. He. saic tl;e iai. sea l e=rchi.tect s:.ould be
laware of the plants in,1igeilous to a. ea n':: t'leir nrowtti habits.
The applicant proposes to use rwo hIJ712 1_i;-?.ting fixtures. This
will be r:'_vit_ ,r;fi at a. later date.
