Respectfully submitted, _______________________________ Daniel Mestizo, Staff Liaison 4 Chamber Music Workshop Outline - Town of Cupertino, by Ajay Mallya What Is This Program All About? Cupertino is home to numerous highly rigorous schools that can at times be very stressful. Additionally, these said schools do not currently have any opportunities for students to perform in small chamber music groups or at least learn about them in an interactive setting. Consequently, this chamber music workshop aims to provide several introductory classes regarding chamber music. Chamber music is a beloved aspect of music because the activity enables one to play fun music with one’s friends, develops crucial social skills that are applied in everyday life, and poses a unique challenge for musicians. Furthermore, chamber music’s fun learning environment ensures engagement (unlike orchestras where some might nod off to sleep), while maintaining an exciting and fun learning environment. In this program, students will gain the opportunity to work in string quartets or piano trios with the help of a mentor, and be a part of a performance at the end of the sessions to showcase what they have learned. How Can A Student Apply? Through a Google Form that will comprise of the following questions: -Name, grade, and school - What instrument do you play, how long have you been playing? - List three of your latest pieces/repertoire - Do you currently play in an orchestra or chamber music group? If so, which one(s)? - Why do you want to join this workshop and learn chamber music? - Students will be able to turn in an audition video of an excerpt by uploading to the Google Form o Audition excerpt will differ for each instrument - Do you have a friend or friends participating as well? If yes, name them **based on the above form and excerpt (skill level), 8 students will be chosen to participate (and will subsequently be placed in groups based on their skill level. Time: - Four 1.5-hour sessions on Saturdays. More sessions can be offered if more students sign-up. o While one group rehearses with the help of a mentor, the other group observes (must stay to observe) Cost: None Materials: Instrument, folder or binder for music, pencil, music stand to be brought by the student When/Where: - Quinlan Community Center, music room or room with a piano - Saturdays during the beginning of the second semester (January) - The workshop will end with a showcase concert. Support required from Quinlan Community Center facilities, and promotional support from Town will be needed 5
