CC Resolution No. 9107 RESOLUTION NO. 9107 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CUPERTINO OPPOSING THE TOBACCO INDUSTRY'S TOBACCO INITIATIVE WHEREAS, Philip Morris has sponsored an initiative that would establish a weak smoking and tobacco control standard for smoking in public places, restaurants, workplaces, outdoor places, use and placement of vending machines, advertising and enforcement; and WHEREAS, the proposed initiative would preempt all existing and future local ordinances and replace them with the new, weaker standard; and WHEREAS, Philip Morris has submitted 607,000 signatures to county election officials around the state, 220,000 more than it needs to qualify the measure for the November 1994 ballot; and WHEREAS, the City of Cupertino has recently enacted an ordinance banning smoking in all public places with limited exceptions in the belief that this will advance the goals of public health and safety; and WHEREAS, the City of Cupertino believes that the initiative is a serious intrusion into local authority; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Cupertino strongly opposes the proposed initiative, PASSED AND ADOPTED at a regular meeting of the City Council of the City of Cupertino this 6th day of June , 1994, by the following vote: ~ Members of the Ci~ Council AYES: NOES: ABSENT: ABSTAIN: Bautista, Burnett, Sorensen, Koppel None Dean None ATTEST: APPROVED: Isl Kim Marie Smith City Clerk Isl Barb KODDel Mayor, City of Cupertino
