This will be a very long, low building, 271 high and setback 400, from Homestead Road and 5001 from Wolfe Road. The concrete block building exterior will be sanded so the aggregate comes forward. There will be a dark brown porcelain fascia and tinted glass set in dark brown annodized aluminum frames. There will be a skylight along the perimeter cf the building. All Air conditioning equipment on the roof will be screened so it will not be visible from the ground. Mr. Watson said there will IDe an illuminated identification sign at the main entrance on Wolfe Road. There will be a non —illu- minated sign at each of the other two entrances. Mr. Irwin asked if there was any possibility that Varian may wish to expand to a second story at a later date. Mr. Watson said this would not be the case. This building is designed strictly as a one-story structure. This will be Variants home for the Vacuum Division: research, administration and assembling of vacuum tubes will be accomplished at this site. Mr. Keith Renner, of Lawrence Halprints office, went over the landscaping plans. The variety and placement of the trees and shrubs are shown in detail on the landscape plans. He asked if there were any suggestions for changes. There were none. The Committee Members all felt that this development will be a credit to the City of Cupertino. Moved by Mr. Irwin, seconded by Mr. Small, to recommend to the City Council for approval, application 240.HC-66, Varian Assoc.; the development to be as per plans submitted for the building, landscaping and signs; the 10 standard conditions to be observed. (continued) Chairman Fitch said a complete presentation was made at the last meeting. The plan more than adequately meets the code. The decision was postponed to give the Committee the chance to go out again and check the area, keeping in mind the objections raised at the last Committee meeting. -2- LLJ Mr® Small feels the building will be a credit to the neighbor- hood. The plans call for high quality.construction all the way .through. Mr.' Irwin feels that, after checking over the plans and taking 'another look at the area, this can. be nothing but a credit to the area. - Dr. Kowitz agreed that this structure will be a credit to the area- however, he asked that the developer review the exterior colors Mr. Loughlin said the exterior _on , ; ve °side D}r?ve and Stevens Canyon Road will be redwood board and batten hori= zontal siding and will have a heavy shake roof.. The colors will be dark brown. The inside of the courtyard will be stugco of 'a light color© The colors of the trim will blend rather than contrast. Two of :the units have -already been built. Since they are now within the City of Cupertino; they are resubmitting the plans. to the Architectural and Site Control Committee for approval. ,This has been previously approved by the County. It' was,noted that this is a two-story structure where the two previous ones were single -story. - 3- The Planning Department check list indicates that a 251 height limit is allowed in this zone; however, it was brought out that there are no two-story structures in that area. The applicant pointed out that he is the owner of the adjoining property (vacant at "-,his time) whose view is the only one that would be affected by the height of this structure. Moved by Mr. Irwin, seconded by Dr. Kowitz, to recommend to the City Council for approval, application 257-HC-67, for a duplex building to be located at 22560 Alcalde Road, subject to the 10 standard conditions; landscaping plans..: As submitted; subject to further review by the Building Department as to height prior to City Council approval; and subject to the Planning Department check list. Application: 258-HC-67, Milam Cleaners, Portal Plaza, Stevens Greek Blvd., requesting Arch. & Site Approval to re -position his sign. Mr. Clyde Milam, 19705 Stevens Creek Blvd., Cupertino, said he proposes to put the first two words of the existing sign above the other words because it is necessary to remove that portion of his sign which is overlaping onto the vacant store next door which is about to be leased. He plans to remove the sign altogether in 6 to 8 months. It was noted that he is well within the square footage allowed. Moved by Dr. Kowitz, seconded by Mr. Irwin, to recommend to the City Council the approval of application 258-HC-67, Milam Cleaners, to combine the two existing signs into one structure, per the plan submitted; old and new signs being identical in appearance and content.
