Application: 249 -HC -66, Mr. & Mrs. Frank Mantia, 19358 Greenwood Drive, requesting Arch. & Site Approval to construct a 320 sq. ft. addition to the existing duplex at 19358 Greenwood Drive. • Mr. Al Newman, building contractor, presented the plans for the recreation room he wants to construct on the rear portion of the duplex. Entry to the room would be through the closet, and ,here will also be an outside exit. There will, after the addition, be a 22' rear yard setback. In answer to Mr. Small's question, Mr. Newman said there would be no plumbing facilities added, just electric heating and lights. Moved by Dr. Kowitz, seconded by Mr. Irwin, to recommend for approval application 2119 -HC -66, contingent on property set- backs being established and plans to be seen by the Chief Building Inspector; otherwise approved as submitted. AYES: Messrs. Irwin, Kowitz, Small, Stern, Fitch NAYS: None Motion carried, 5-0 C. Application: 250 -HC -66, Straw Hat Corporation, 14680 Washington Avenue, San Leandro, requesting Arch.,& Site Approval to construct a restaurant on south side of Stevens Creek Blvd. between Crossroads Center and the old Wilson home. Mr. Rick Anderson, of Gunn -Miller Realtors, 777 N. First Street, San Jose, presented the plot plan and elevations. Mr. Charles Olson, 11680 Washington Avenue, San Leandro, of Straw Hat Corporation, presented pictures of the types of buildings they have constructed at their various business locations. He said they have twelve locations throughout Northern California. They have no firm image by which they must abide, and are willing to work with the City to reach an amicable agreement. They use pastel rather than garrish colors. They prefer to use their straw hat shaped sign, but have a shield type as an alternative. They like to have a reader board, 4' x 81, for the convenience of the customers. In looking at the various pictures, Mr. Irwin took a dim view of the exterior signs and figures on the walls, etc., but felt the picture of the structure with the "shed roof" and large oak trees in the background is the closest to what the City has envisioned for that portion of Stevens Creek Blvd. -2- M¢.was:::.c:oncer"ned .,.a.bo.Li -the traffic and concentration. of ..yo . ut.l?s which gLite "often erupts ,%nto situations the police have to handle which might occur at a place such as this. Application: 247 -HC -66, Shaw's of San Francisco, 759 Menlo Oaks Drive, Menlo Park, requesting Arch. & Site Control Approval to construct, a 1590 sq. ft., 50' diameter, essentially round building, to be located ad'acent to the Wilson home on Stevens Creek Blvd. (edfitinued Mr. Ralph Todd, 759 Menlo Oaks Drive, Menlo Park, California, gave a complete resume of the events leading up to their choice of the Cupertino location for their business, after checking out available locations from South San Francisco to Santa Cruz. They liked the environment, the large trees on • the property, and the opportunity to put up their own choice of building. They have deliberately avoided shopping centers. He presented a rendering of the round -;lass building, with interior pastel colors and non -glaring light fixtures resembling ice cream cones. He said they also intend to have some tables outside, under the oalti tree for customers who prefer to eat their ice cream on the premises. The sidewalk around the building will be of exposed aggregate, and Mr. Todd plans to • put large planters containing some of his own 25 -year-old camelias and other choice plants at various spots on this sidewalk from time to time. The sign, in the shape of a large lollypop, is under the 20' limitation. He just now learned:of the Mardesich-11ilson sign covenant, so he must give further thought to placement of the sign; possibly to one side of the entry, at the edge of the sidewalk and attached to one of the overhead beams. Mr. Wilson felt this would comply. When questioned by Mr. Small, Mr. Todd said that, as a general rule, there will be no paper "sale" signs on the windows. The idea of an all -glass building is so -that passers-by can see the merchandize before entering. Moved by Dr. Kowitz, seconded by Mr. Small, to recommend for approval application 247 -HC -66, as per the rendition and prints presented, landscaping as shown, and the ten standard conditions; location of the sign to be submitted a;; a later date.
