Mro Todd assured the Committee they, wig I stay within the Sign 'rdande llri tatzons as to height ; _ Mr. Irwin asked about the colors. Mr. Todd said they plan to use pastel shades of yellow, pink and green. Mr. Ward added that they are not selling the building, but are allowing the merchandise to sell itself by exposure. In. addition to ice cream, they sell small gift items. Mr. Ward stated the parking will not be as is shown on the rendering, a spoked effect around the round building, because this is not economical use of the expensive property. They plan to take advantage of the oak and palm trees on the pro- perty. Landscaping of the parking lot will be directed more toward the natural foliage. The applicant produced a plot plan which showed diagonal parking. Mr. Wilson said parking will extend all the way from Shaw's to the Post Office. He is bringing in each development for individual approval. Mr. Ward said the building materials are: wood structure, cement floor, lots of glass, and exposed aggregate sidewalk. Mr. Irwin said the idea of the building is modern and unusual. He asked how it would blend in with the surroundings. Here we have a tremendous old oak tree with a tudor house nestled underneath. He wonders if the mixture of architecture will be compatible. The overall development as we see it from this rendering and proposed plot plan shows not only Shaw's, but a Straw Hat Pizza Parlor and the still -to -be -resolved Red Barn. Mr. Stern is concerned about the appurtenances on the roof. He is also concerned about the conglomeration. The rendering does not convey the true proposal. It is hard to give a re- commendation on other than what is shown to the Committee. Mr. Ward said what has been changed is the air conditioning has been placed on the roof and the parking altered. Dr. Kowitz thinks this is a delightful building, but there is some question of how it will fit in with the area. We have four different types of architecture in the immediate area. Mr. Ward said the basic premise of this building design is to keep it clean, neat and uncluttered. They feej. it is a very fine blend of the old and the new. Dr. Kowitz feels it will behoove them to visually present their proposal as to colors, parking, etc. He added that the pur- pose of this Committee is to get the best possible building we can for the City. Moved by Mr. Irwin, seconded by Mr. Stern, to continue appli- cation 247 -HC -66, to allow the applicant sufficient time to produce an artist's rendering of the building as it will actually appear in its surroundings, including the parking lot and surrounding trees. AYES: Comm. Irwin, Stern, Kowitz NAYS: None ABSENT: Comm. Small, Fitch Motion carried, 3-0 Mr. Todd wished to add that he is a great one to retain exist- ing trees and to move them, if necessary, in order to preeerve them. He makes only show places and does only the very beet work. -2- .r 9P Ah, Dr. Kowitz asked the applicant to check with the Building qr Department as soon as they are ready with their proposal., and a special meeting can be arranged so the applicant can be on the next City Council agenda. Mr. Irwin was concerned about setting precedent by calling a special meeting, but was informed this has been done before5 and can be done at -the discretion of the Committee. B. Application: 248 -HC -66., Ad Art,, Inc., 1225 N. 5th St., San Jose, requesting Arch. & Site Control Approval to erect a 916" x 4111", double-faced_, free-standing pole sign., for -the Pic & Pan Restaurant, 10650 S. Saratoga - Sunnyvale Road. Mr. Jim McLey, of Ad Art, presented the rendering of the pro- posed -ground sign which will be within the height limitation set by the Sign Ordinance.- ' The bronze pole will support the orange and brown sign, which will be the of the same colors as used on the building itself. Moved by Mr. Stern., seconded by Mr. Irwin, to recommend for approval application 248 -HC -66., Ad Art, Inc., for a free- standing5 double-faced ground sign for the Pic & Pan Restaurant, subject to the 10 standard conditions, and per the plans as submitted to this Committee.
