Way, Palo Alto, California, requesting approval from
Arch. & Site Control Committee to construct a 150,000
square foot building, to be located on the east side
of Wolfe Road, south of Homestead, known as Phase I
of the Varian Industrial Site.
Present at this meeting were Mr. Herb Gardner, representing
Varian Associates; Messrs. William Watson and Robert Mountjoy,
representing Rockrise.& Watson Architectural Planners; -and
Mr. Mike Splitstone,of George S. Nolte Civil Engineers.
Mr. Watson reviewed the total site plan with the Committee,
stating that they have been working closely with the City
staff. The main, or visitors' entrance will be on Wolfe Road.
There will also be employee entrances on Homestead Road,
Pruneridge and Tantau. Mr. Watson then reviewed the internal
street pattern. Parking will be along the perimeter and the
parkin lots will be concealed by the implementation of a
5' to 9' berm. Building 1 will have a maximum height of 26'.
Mr. Stern asked about the size of the trees which will be
planted. Mr. Watson said the orchards will be left standing
until each phase is developed. The trees will be 5 -gallon
size, which will reach 5' to 6' the first year. He added
that it is to their advantage to make this look good.
Lawrence Halprin is the landscape architect of Vallco Park.
The buildings will be similar in architecture. They will be
coordinated, but will not all be the same. The first phase
will be a 150,000 square foot building and the required
parking for that phase. All interior streets are private
rather than dedicated, but Mr. 1,Alatson assured the Committee
that they would be paved.
The Committee asked to see the elevations of the building at
a later date, when they are ready.
Mr. Mountjoy said the trees chosen for the berm are:
olive, carab, Catalina cherry, oriental persimmon, hawthorne,
and camphor in 5 -gallon size and staghorn sumac in 1 -gallon
size. Phase I trees are to be: American elm, red oak,
London plane, locust, Modesto ash and redwood -- all 5 -gallon
size.
Varian hopes to start Building 1 by January first. They
hope to gec the grading done by October first and should have
the building elevations by September first,
Mr. Gardner submitted drawings of the kind of entrance sign
contemplated. In addition, there will probably be identi-
fication signs on the buildings. The entire project will •
be in five phases, and each phase will come before the
H -Control Committee.
Moved by Dr. Kowitz, seconded by Mr. Stern, to recommend
application 240 -HC -66 for approval of Phase I, for the
general layout of the master plot plan; Phase I consideration
for increment one of building one; landscaping for Phase I;
