June 14, 1966IV APPLICATIONS
A. Application: 229 -HC -66, Short Stop, Inc., 3435 Mt. Diablo
Blvd., Lafayette, requesting Architectural and Site Control
Approval to erect a pole sign at the Short Stop Market,
19541 Richwood Drive.
Mr. John Roscoe, 31'35 Mt. Diablo Blvd., Lafayette, presented
plans of the proposed pole sign, to be erected at the end of
the sidewalk. The two spheres at the top of the sign would
be dimly illuminated. This pole sign will be for the Short
Stop Market only.
This sign is in keeping with the Sign Ordinance; it is 20'
to the top of the highest sphere.
The Committee felt the pole sign should be protected from
cars backing into it. The applicant agreed to put A pumice
stone planter, a little higher than cars' bumpers and the
width of the sidewalk, around the pole sign.
Moved by Mr. Small, seconded by Mr. Stern, to recommend ap-
proval of application 229 -HC -66, subject to the maximum height
of 20' and subject to the planter at the base of the pole, as
added to the submitted diagram, and subject to the omission
of the spire.

B. Application: 230 -HC -66, Star Real Estate Service and
State Farm Insurance, 10111 N. Saratoga -Sunnyvale Road,
requesting Architectural & Site Control Approval to erect
one 21.9" x 41 sign reading "Star Real Estate Service" and
one 3' x 3' sign above to read "State Farm Insurance,"
to be located at 10111 N. Saratoga -Sunnyvale Road.
Mr. Paul Paulides, 20663 Cheryl, Cupertino, presented the
Plans, stating there are actually three businesses at this
location. The total allowable sign surface is 112 sq. ft.,
and he is asking for only 21 sq. ft. He wants to add a
small 1' x 3' sign identifying Deserete Realty.
It was pointed out that this is a temporary location; that
this building may be torn down within one year.
There were comments that perhaps it would be of benefit to
the businesses as well as to the City of Cupertino if the
signs were of a more unified nature. It- was suggested that
all three interested parties get together and put together
a sign and resubmit the application.
Mr. Arthur Wooding, one of the principals, asked if they
might have a temporary sign in the interim. He was granted
this request.
Dr. Kowitz suggested they consider putting a frame of some
sort around signs for the three businesses. Mr. Stern sug-
gested a pole sign, similar to the Mayfair Market sign.
Moved by Dr. Kowitz, seconded by Mr. Stern, to continue this
application 230 -HC -66, until the next regular meeting.

Approval to construct an addition adjoining the existing
auto suppler store at 20301 Stevens Creek Blvd.
Mr, Robert ?', Scott, 20301 Stevens Creek Blvd,, Cupertino,
Presented his plans.
Chairman Fitch read tyle June 111
Director in regard to this application letter from the Planning
Mr. Scott said this is merely a commercial building in which
they will store and sell tires,,
front
on it, and it will be an addition ltowthe existinill have glass building
and an expansion of an already established business. He g
objected to being categorized with service stations, He said
he purchased, the lot next door to.his business and will get
• a Record of Survey to join the two together. He did not see
the need for a Tentative Map.
Mr. Scott's plans show 1!6 parking spaces, which is more than
adequate, according to the Ordinance.
It was pointed out that the reason a Use Permit is involved
here is that the business operation
install tires, The applicant agreed lthat hes to owill sbelinsdtall-
ing tires, aligning wheels, repairing tires, etc. The doors
through which the cars pass into the building open on the
east side. They will accommodate 1;
is planned so the customers will cars at one time, This
store and the cars needing attention ){will in tbe he front of the
the east side, parked along
Chairman Fitch said he would like to see some effort made to
screen this operation from Stevens -Creek Blvd,
the Boulevard will soon be transformed. Further, lohenwouldt
rather seethe results of the Planning Commission action on
the Use Permit before H -Control makes a decision.
It was suggested that perhaps the applicant could use one of
the parking spaces and erect some sort of screening and some
greenery. The applicant saida chain link fence with redwood
slats is now on the eastern boundary; he could bring it
across at the front of the building, :at the raised planter,
and install a gate to lock it at night.
