Application: 287-HC-67, Stevens Music, Inc., 19701 Stevens Creek Blvd., Cupertino, requesting Architectural and Site Approval to erect a treble clef shaped, metal and plastic sign. The staff did not have the opportunity to check this application and, unfortunately, this proposal does not meet with our Sign Ordinance. This sign, which is the music company's trademark, is existing in Sunnyvale. It exceeds our Sign Ordinance by 12" in height. Mr. Stevens said the proposed is a $2200 sign; the alternative is a 4' x 8' plywood sign. He wished to comply with the City's ordinances, but did not see how the sign could be altered to conform. He added that it is a very beautiful sign, done in good taste, and would like very much to use it. Comm. Kowitz said, in lieu of the fact that Mr. Stevens had not been informed that this sign would not conform and the fact that the man from the sign company was not present, perhaps this application should be postponed. Comm. Fitch noted the proposed sign does not meet the Ordinance. He felt there was no particular hard ship on which to base an Exception. And any alternate sign would have to come before this Committee, also. He said the treble cleft is a unique and desirable sign; it is unfortunate that it is not within the Sign Ordinance. Moved by Comm. Kowitz, seconded by Comm. Fitch, to continue applica- tion 287-HC-67, Stevens Music, Inc., to the next regular meeting on Wednesday, September 13, 1967. Discussion followed. Comm. Kowitz suggested the applicant get together with the Chief Building Inspector prior to the next meeting to discuss alternatives. -2- It was brought out that the applicant new hash lle.gal plywood sign on the sidewalk which 'perhaps could b6 tennporarily: put, up where it would not obstruct pedestrian traffic. The City grants permission to new businesses to put up temporary signs until they are established. Chairman Irwin was in favor° of allowing the applicant to put this plywood sign on the roof., not to exceed three weeks. Comm. Fitch was in favor of having the applicant continue th_ the paper signs in the wind.ow3 not to exceed. 35% of the window area., and to remove the sign on the sidewalk. Mr. Stevens, brought it to the attention of the Committee that September lst As when-his company starts its busiest season with. rentals of,instruments to students; his business will suffer if customers can't readily find his new location.
