The; meeting was ca lled to order at 8.010 p/m. by. Chairman.Small, who
subsequently led the assemblage in the flag salute.
Committee members presentg Youivansg Adams, McLarenp Buellesbach,
Small. Also, present: Chief Building Inspector Benev-ich and Recording
Secretary Lucie M. Matzley.
Chairman Small read acommunication received by the City Building
Department, addressed to the Architecture and Site Control Committee,
from The,odore R. Greer, Chairman ofthe Redeemer, Lutheran Church of
Cupertino. This communication expressed a need to increase the
awareness of the community to the existence of the church on Stelling
Road by the . installation of three,signs on. six feet high steel poles,
22", x 30" of metal structures.
In -discussing the request, Member Youmans felt that, although the intent
to .raw attention to the church,,was commendable, the granting of the
request would set a precedent for all other churches in the community -
Member Adams reserved final judgement on any consideration' until such
time as he had had an opportunity' to view the locations at which the reqfiest
sighs are proposed and Chairman Small agreed,; Member McLaren pointed discussed' -
out, that the proposed signs are at least one-half mile removed from
the location of the churchland she also preferred.to view the sites;
Member Buellesbach . was of the opinion that most community churches
have directional signs affixed to light standards and that the request
should be considered in light of the existing signs.
Member Youmans moved to refer this letter to the City Couhcil with an letter re -
explanation from the Chairman as to the feelings of this Committee at ferred to

Chief Building Inspector Benevich pointed out that directional signs
for community churches, are allowed under the Ordinance both for place- explanation
ment on the church property as well as on street approaches.
Member Adams recommended that the request be answered in writing by
the Building Department, indicating that there is an Ordinance con
trolling such signs,and asking that the applicant make formal formal

a course of action. Membier Youmans agreed to make this recommendation requested.

Member Youmans wished tc correct the minutes of the December 11, 1968
meeting to read on page 2 under "376-HC-68 continued" in the second
paragraph possibility of moving the landscaping closer to the
parking lot rather than "to the construction", Member McLaren
moved to approve the minutes of December 11, 1968 as corrected, Member
Adams seconded and it was passed unanimously.
ADDlications
A. 374-HC-68., Vallco Park, 1C750 N. Wolfe Road, Cupertino; requesting
approval of the landscaping for the multi -tenant building to be
located on the east side of Tantau Avenue immediately south of
Calabazas Creek.
Mr. Walter Ward, General Manager of Vallco Park, presented the plans and
explained that they had been prepared by a qualified landscape architect.
Member Youmans moved to recommend application 374-HC-68 for approval per
the landscaping and plot plans as submitted, subject to the applicable
12 Standard Conditions. Member McLaren seconded and it was passed
unanimously.
B. 387-HC-68., Blaze Plastics, Inc., 37345 Blacow Road, Fremont;
requesting approval to erect a 2' x 20' plexiglas sign for
the K-Sports Varsity Shop, located at 10887 South Blaney Avenue.
Mr. George Pope of Blaze Plastics presented the application and ex-
plained that the requested•sign was constructed of internally illuminated
plexiglas and well within the Ordinance limitations.
Chief Building Inspector Benevich stated that the proposal showed white
background with red lettering and was one of three signs which would
have red letters as opposed to the black letters on all others in the area.
Member McLaren moved to recommend approval of application 387-HC-68 per
the plot plans as submitted, subject to the 12 Standard Conditions.
Member Buellesbach seconded and it was passed unanimously.
Unfinished Business
Chief Building Inspector Benevich reported on the requested background
research of the facia and side signs of the First Valley Bank Building
on Stevens Creek Boulevard and Miller Avenue, pointing out that the
calculation for the allowable square f,-;otage would be a matter cf
separating the signs for the bank from those of the entire center, as
the First Valley Bank has an allowance of 157 square feet and proposes
not more than 135 sq. ft.
Discussion ensued among the Committee members on the facia as well as
the side signs and the Ordinance requirements which governs these signs.
Upon a reminder by the Chief Building Inspector that Application 315-HC-67,,
covering the above matter, had been approved by the City Council at its
last meeting, the discussions ceased.

It was pointed out that the City Council had at its last meeting
approved Application 376-HC-689 Harman Manager Investment9 Inc. and
that a building permit had since been issued.
Member Youmans moved to table the review of Ordinance 220 (j), Member
Adams seconded and it was passed unanimously.
New Business
Several Committee members pointed out continuing Ordinance violations
within the City of Cupertino9.all of which were referred to the
Building Department for further action.
There being no further business2 the meeting adjourned urned at 9g06 p.m.
upon the motion by Member Adams and thesec6nd by Member McLaren.
