10371 Leola Ct Silver Maple Assessient 14 January 20_9 Eric Wu, c/o Connie Carson 4170 Alta Mesa Ave Palo Alto, CA 94306 R€: ASSESSMENT OF ONE SILVER MAPLE AT 10371 LEOI A C T IN CUPERTINO, CA. Dear Mr. Wu, Connie Carson requested that I inspect a tree in the rear yard of 10371 Leola Court, to support an application for removal with the City of Cupertino. I performed my inspection on January 13, 2019. My findings and recommendations herein are based solely on a visual inspection from the ground on January 13. No advanced assessments were performed as part of this assignment. Description of the Tree The tree is a Silver maple (Acer saccharine) in the rear yard of 10371 Leola Court, in Cupertino, California. Trunk diameter is 37 inches at 54 inches above grade. The tree has been "topped" previously for high voltage line clearance, leaving many large -diameter pruning wounds. At each wound is a spray of 6 to 12 epicormic shoots. Additionally, each of these wounds show signs of wood decay and there is no visible callous growth. A previously failed 12 -inch diameter limb was still on the ground at the time of my inspection. It was completely rotted throughout, and landed on the back patio, directly next to the barbeque grill. Due to the lack of vigor and absence of callous growth I assess the tree to be in poor health. Because of past topping, aggressive re -sprouting: multiple areas of decay, and the previous failure, I assess the structure of the tree to be very poor. The overall condition rating for the tree is also very poor. Photo 1. Silver maple in rear yard of 10371 Leola Court. Multiple heading cuts with no callous growth; decay at each pruning wound. A failed 12 - inch diameter limsh was on the ground at the time of my inspection (red oval). As with most fast-growing trees, they are also weak - wooded, poor compartmentalizers, and break apart readily. This particular tree has been managed .n a way that exacerbates the species' predisposition to failures. The biggest area of concern with this tree is the multiple sites of decay near and below previous topping cuts. There is no management option to arrest this decay, which will worsen with time, resulting in additional failures into an outdoor living space (rear patio). The absence of callous growth at these old pruning wounds is an indication that the tree lacks vigor, further reducing the tree's limited ability to compartmentalize and resist decay. These epicormic .shoots are a response to the aggressive heading cuts made on the tree. Epicormic shoots are poorly attached to the parent stem. They pose a higher risk of branch,/limb failure as they grow in length and diameter. Minimization of the risk requires careful repeated pruning treatments which are costly and impractical given the condition of this tree. Photo 2. A previously failed 12 -Inch diameter limb was still on the ground at the time of my inspection. it was completely rotted throughout and landed on the back patio, directly next to the barbeque grill. Multiple large limbs are at risk of failing at any time. Therefore, 1 recommend that this tree be removed immediately. Please consult the City of Cupertino to obtain any necessary permits prior to trimming or removing the tree. If you have any questions, or I can be of further assistance, please do not hesitate to let me know. Walk up the west driveway and walk westward on the sidewalk between the building of 10371 and 10369. Enter via the gate to your left and head south. Turn left at the end of the building and head eastward towards the gate dividing the two yards. Subject tree at the edge of the patio. Replacement tree will be determined by the Arborist and I would suggest any replacement tree should be located more towards the center of the yard. https:/twww.google.00mlmapsiplace/l 0371 +Leoia+Ct,+Cupertino,+CA+950141 x@37.3181539,-122.0123459,3a,75y,180h,90tldata=!3m7! 1 e 1 !3m5!1 s8... 1/1 1/29/2019 _iv, 10371 Leola Ct 10371 Leola Ct - Google Maps 10371 Leola Ct Cupertino, CA 95014 d * 8X9Q+72 Cupertino, California Imagery ©2019 Google, Map data @2019 Google 20 ft LOC-PtASlOel 0 P(Iev`1005 X new traa- U c td wte-►c 6 b r) ko be T https://www.google.com/maps/place/10371 +Leola+Ct,+Cupertino,+CA+95014/@37.3178259,-122.0127244,61 m/data=!3m 1! 1 e3!4m5!3m4! 1 sOx8O8fb... 1/2 Gold medallion (Cassia leptophylla) 20-25 Yt rounded or umbrella
