Eucalyptus sideroxylon (Red Ironbark Eucalyptus) - 15.7" DBH Observations Eucalyptus sideroxylon #1 is: • Located on the front of the property, in front of the leasing office building • Planted within an approximate 24 square foot planting area, next to a sidewalk • Has a slight lean towards the sidewalk, the canopy is crowded by Eucalyptus sideroxylon #2 Please see photos in Attachment 1 for further observations. Eucalyptus sideroxylon #2 is: • Located on the front of the property, in front of the leasing office building • Planted within an approximate 24 square foot planting area, next to a sidewalk and driveway • The structure is poor, the tree is forked at approximately 15' above grade, with a lean over the fire lane • The canopy is crowding Eucalyptus sideroxylon #1 and Eucalyptus sideroxylon #3 Please see photos in Attachment 2 for further observations. Eucalyptus sideroxylon #3 is: • Located on the front of the property, in front of the leasing office building • Planted within an approximate 24 square foot planting area, next to a sidewalk and driveway • The tree is next to a firelane, and high traffic sidewalk area • The condition of the tree is poor, it has a sparse canopy with a previous failure at approximately 10' above grade • Multiple stems have sprouted from the same area on the trunk Please see photos in Attachment 3 for further observations. Testing and There were no soil, tree or other physical testings. Analysis Discussion According to Cal Poly's Urban Forest Ecosystem Institute, Red Ironbark Eucalyptus can grow between 30 to 90 feet in height, with a canopy area of 30 to 60 feet wide, growing 36 inches or more per year. Generally, a tree of this size and growing capabilities require at least 48 square feet to provide appropriate space for the tree to grow and should be spaced apart. Eucalyptus sideroxylon #2 has crowded the canopies of Eucalyptus sideroxylon #1 and Eucalyptus sideroxylon #3, possibly causing the previous failure on Eucalyptus sideroxylon #3. These three Eucalyptus sideroxylon trees are the only three Red Ironbark trees on the property. The client seeks to remove and replace these trees with three Red Maples in another location on the property. Please see the following attachments. Recommendations Eucalyptus sideroxylon #1, #2, and #3 are planted too close together and do not have appropriate soil or canopy space to grow, as evident by the crowded canopies. The structure is poor on Eucalyptus sideroxylon #2 since it is forked at approximately 15' above grade, and Eucalyptus sideroxylon #3, having suffered a recent failure. Additionally, the trees are planted above a firelane and require yearly crown raises to maintain appropriate clearance. A Plus Tree, Inc. recommends removing the three trees and replacing with a species appropriate for this planting location.
