SPECIAL CUPERTINO CITY COUNCIL COMMUNITY WORKSHOP
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
At 7:00 p.m. Mayor Gilbert Wong called the Special City Council Community
Workshop to order and led the Pledge of Allegiance.
ROLL CALL
Present: Mayor Gilbert Wong, Vice Mayor Rod Sinks, and Council members
Barry Chang, Orrin Mahoney, and Mark Santoro. Absent: None.
Present: Planning Commissioners Don Sun, Margaret Gong, and Alan Takahashi.
Absent: Chair Paul Brophy and Vice Chair Winnie Lee.
Present: Bicycle Pedestrian Commission Chair William Chang Chan, Vice Chair
Pete Heller, and Commissioner Sean Lyn. Absent: Commissioners Jill Mitsch and
Vidula Aiyer.
ORAL COMMUNICATIONS
Cathy Helgersen talked about the upcoming Santa Clara County meeting on November
20 regarding Lehigh. She noted that the County Planning department would be
discussing the need for Lehigh to put in a Selenium Plant. She urged everyone to attend
the meeting.
WORKSHOP - Community Discussion on Traffic Safety Issues Near Schools
Written communications for this item included Frequently Asked Questions regarding
traffic safety,near schools, tri-school and City-wide traffic safety activities, and handout
explaining how the small groups would work.
Mayor Wong welcomed everyone and explained that the workshop was taking place in
response to the recent death of Monta Vista High School student Ethan Wong.
City Manager David Brand thanked everyone for coming and introduced Captain Ken
Binder from the Sheriff's office and Director of Public Works Timm Borden.
Captain Binder gave an update on the investigation.
Director Borden reviewed some programs already in place regarding traffic safety.
The facilitator explained how the small groups would work including identifying "city-
wide," "neighborhood", and "your street" traffic safety concerns on a map and then to
discuss solutions for improving traffic safety in those same areas.
After the small group discussions, each table reported out their top solutions for traffic
safety. Cards were also collected which contained any further ideas from community
members.
