City of Cupertino
Economic Development Committee
Regular Meeting
October 20, 2004
1. CALL TO ORDER
At 9:08 a.m. Carol Atwood called the meeting to order at Cupertino City Hall,
Conference Room A, 10300 Torre Avenue, Cupertino.
2. ROLL CALL
City Staff: Carol Atwood, David Knapp, Steve Piasecki, Ralph Qualls
Council: Richard Lowenthal
Chamber: Jack Hubby, Mark McKenna, Orrin Mahoney
Absent: Sandra James, Gilbert Wong
Guests: Karen Purtich
3. OLD BUSINESS
A. Committee Format and Meeting Times
Carol Atwood reviewed the format proposal with the committee. She suggested
that the committee meet quarterly since development within the city happens over
a period of time rather than monthly. The committee concurred to meet on the
third Wednesday of January, April, July, and October at 9:00 a.m.
Carol also reviewed the current committee composition. She suggested that the
City representatives include the City Manager, three Department Heads, two
Councilmembers and one Planning Commissioner and that the Chamber
representatives include the Executive Director, Community Relations V.P., large
business representative and small business representative. Richard Lowenthal
noted that it would be good to have the Chamber provide the City with feedback
regarding its representation on the committee to ensure that it is represented
appropriately for economic development related matters. Chamber
representatives agreed to evaluate their representation on the committee and
provide feedback to the City.
The purpose and goals of the committee were discussed. Chamber representatives
Orrin Mahoney and Jack Hubby agreed to provide contact information for target
businesses and Carol Atwood agreed to draft the letter to be signed by the mayor
and chamber executive director.
B. Key Development Activity
Steve Piasecki reviewed the development activity report.
