Arborist Report for 20800 Homestead Rd The Markham Prepared on 10/13/2017 Prepared by Sarah Hon Gaskin ISA Certified Arborist WE-9519A 1900 Bates Ave. Suite L Concord, CA 94520 (866) 815-2525 sarah@aplustree.com www.aplustree.com Background Information I, Sarah Hon Gaskin, ISA Certified Arborist with A Plus, have been the managing Arborist for Prometheus Real Estate Group’s owned and managed properties since 2012. Over the course of my assignment, I have been managing the properties with an overall view of their urban forest health as a whole. Not only are species diversity and age diversity important factors, but also long-term planning in terms of future growth, liability and sustainable practices with the current species population. Keeping this is in mind, the Red Ironbark Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus sideroxylon) is one species I’ve been working to phase out from their landscape since 2012 due to the hazardous nature and poor structure of that particular species. We have been phasing out this species on this particular property, The Markham, located at 20800 Homestead Rd are in the last phase of removals. This report is concerning six (6) Red Ironbark Eucalyptus trees located at 20800 Homestead Rd, (also known as The Markham). Prometheus is seeking to obtain a tree removal permits these trees with the intention to replace them on a 2:1 ratio with a several species that are more suitable for the site. Assignment (and any limiting factors) The assignment is to identify and remove the Eucalyptus trees located at 20800 Homestead Rd.. The assignment is also to provide reason for removal, and to provide a removal and a replacement plan in conjunction with the city tree ordinance with the purpose to obtain permit for removal. Factors are limited only to the trees in this report. This is a visual inspection from ground grade only. 1 TR-2017-41 01/04/18 Ellen Yau Observation Six (6) Trees located at 20800 Homestead Rd, The Markham: 2 TR-2017-41 01/04/18 Ellen Yau Testing and Analysis There were no soil, tree or other physical testings. Discussion All six (6) trees listed in the tables above have multiple leaders and poor structure. Suckers have become large branches whose attachments are significantly weaker. Limb failures have occurred on several of these trees already. Future limb failures are probable. The Red Ironbark species particularly is a species of tree is not only an undesirable species to have in an urban forest community, but they are common to limb breakage and failures. The multiple leaders have V-shaped angles at the crotch with signs of included bark, which areas are also significantly weaker than if the co-dominants had a U-shaped crotch. The included bark at the crotch is a significant point of structural weakness and acts as a wedge and force the branch union to split apart. The target of these trees are high: in a populated community and adjacent to buildings, walkways and parking lots. Recommend ations The recommendation is that these six (6) trees be removed from the landscape, and be replaced with twelve (12) 24” box trees in the same or nearby locations. Species recommendations for the site, need and space are listed in the table above. Locations of the removal and replacement locations are in the Attachments I below.
