Background I, Sarah Hon Gaskin, ISA Certified Arborist with A Plus, have been the managing Arborist for
Prometheus Real Estate Group's owned and managed properties since 2012. Over the course of my
Information assignment, I have been managing the properties with an overall view of their urban forest health as
a whole. Not only are species diversity and age diversity important factors, but also long-term
planning in terms of future growth, liability and sustainable practices with the current species
population.
Keeping this is in mind, the Red Ironbark Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus sideroxylon) is one species I've been
working to phase out from their landscape since 2012 due to the hazardous nature and poor
structure of that particular species.
We have been phasing out this species on this particular property,The Biltmore Apartments, located
at 10159 South Blaney and are in the last phase of removals.
In addition to the remaining Red Ironbark Eucalyptus on this property, there is a row of five (5)
Eucalyptus trees on the on the adjacent property, Safari Kid Daycare, who's tree roots are in a very
limited growing space are damaging the retaining wall. The five Eucalyptus are made up of four(4)
Silver pollar Eucalyptus, Eucalyptus cinerea, and one (1) Red Ironbark Eucalyptus, Eucalyptus
sideroxylon. Safari Kid has complied with the removal of these trees if removal permit is approved.
This report is concerning eleven (11) Red Ironbark Eucalyptus trees located at 10159 South Blaney,
(also known as The Biltmore), one (1) Red Ironbark Eucalyptus and four(4) Silver pollar Eucalyptus
trees on the neighboring property located at 20100 Stevens Creek Blvd, Cupertino, CA 95014 (Safari
Kid Daycare). This makes up a total of sixteen (16)trees.
Prometheus is seeking to obtain a tree removal permits these trees with the intention to replace
them on a 2:1 ratio with a several species that are more suitable for the site.
Assignment The assignment is to identify and remove the Eucalyptus trees located at 10159 South Blaney, and/or
affecting the property. The assignment is also to provide reason for removal, and to provide a
(and any removal and a replacement plan in conjunction with the city tree ordinance with the purpose to
limiting obtain permit for removal.

Testing and
Analysis There were no soil, tree or other physical testings.
Discussion
All sixteen (16)trees listed in the tables above have multiple leaders and poor structure. Suckers
have become large branches whose attachments are significantly weaker. Limb failures have occurred
on several of these trees already. Future limb failures are probable.
The Red Ironbark species particularly is a species of tree is not only an undesirable species to have in
an urban forest community, but they are common to limb breakage and failures. The 11 Red
Ironbarks located at Biltmore, and the 1 located at Kid Safari all have very poor structure, multiple
leaders and weak attachments. The multiple leaders have V-shaped angles at the crotch with signs of
included bark, which areas are also significantly weaker than if the co-dominants had a U-shaped
crotch. The included bark at the crotch is a significant point of structural weakness and acts as a
wedge and force the branch union to split apart. The target of these trees are high: in a populated
community and adjacent to buildings, walkways and parking lots.
4
The four(4)Silver pollar Eucalyptus located at Kid Safari also have many of the same issues as the Red
Ironbark: Multiple leaders, included bark,v-shaped crotches. Additionally, these had been planted in
a narrow planter strip between a retaining wall and parking lot. These trees have outgrown their
space and roots are lift and damaging surrounding infrastructure. The trunk and anchor roots on the
tree are too close to both the wall and curb to be able to endure root cutting without significant
structural risks.
These trees are also lining a parking lot for the Kid Safari Day Care, which creates a high target area
were a limb or tree to fail.
Recommend The recommendation is that these sixteen (16)trees be removed from the landscape, and be
replaced with thirty-two (32) 24" box trees in the same or nearby locations.
