Re: Tree removals for sewer line renovations at 10200 North Tantau Ave, North West corner of
parking lot nearinterstate 280.
SCOPE OF WORK:The purpose of this report is evaluate the condition of(4) Coastal Redwoods
(Sequoia semperverens) prior to removal due to excavation at the site. Note was taken of the
trees immediaYely adjacent to work site for tree preservation efforts.
Tools used: Tape measure and Laser Range finder
OBSERVATIONS: On April 11, 2017 I visited the site and included my findings as follows
Subject trees are numbered from south to north.

DISCUSSSION
At time of inspection no survey markers where present to determine exact excavation area,
trees slated for removal where requested by contractor.Trees 1-4 should be removed by
Certified Arborist by climbing or man lift and heavy sections of trunks should be directed away
from the root zones of adjacent healthy trees.
Excavation near adjacent trees should be done with caution as not to damage the root zones of
these trees, basic guide lines have been attached to this report. Installing protective boarding
around trunks of trees that may be within reach of heavy machinery is strongly advised to
prevent mechanical damage. The placement of heavy machinery on adjacent tree root zones as
well as any cut materials (soil) is not advised as it could cause compaction and root decline.
Operators should avoid long periods of exhaust directly at or beneath the canopy of adjacent
trees, as this can burn and have a toxic effect to tree health.
Tree Replacement should be planned with the property owner and underground utility agency
to avoid future repeated tree removal. Due to limited planting space at the work site each tree
should be replaced with (1) 36" Box Coastal Redwood (Sequoia semperverens) per tree
removal, as opposed to 2-1, 24" box specimens. Planting should be done or supervised by
certified arborist to insure all Best Management Practices are met, and irrigation or regular
watering should be established.
ATTACHED TO THIS REPORT ARE PICTURES AND BASIC GUIDELINES FOR EXCAVATION NEAR TREES.

Guidelines for Excavation near Trees
Tree roots expand far beyond the canopy of the tree, most roots grow within the top 6-
8" of the soil. It is a common misconception that roots grow straight down or form a mirror
image of the canopy. Roots grow where conditions are most favorable, seeking oxygen water
and nutrients, knowing this we can make educated guesses as to where important roots may be
hidden. This guideline will assist in minimizing damage during excavation and will take a more
practical look at the subject, but it is important that an experienced certified arborist is
consulted prior to excavation and before cutting large roots that could potentially make the
tree unstable and fall, causing damage to property or worse yet injury or death.
BEFORE YOU DIG
-Measure the diameter of the tree at shoulder level ''
(Using a diameter tape or straight across the widest part
with a tape measure) • ._
!•
-Multiply that measurement by 5 and for your TPZ*
(EXAMPLE 12"diameter tree,would have a 5'TPZ')
Using this method will provide better protection for trees '?
that are not leaning or already structurally unstable. '
;'

-Sterilize all tools before working near high value trees, '' .2 ' 1
,,, y ,r4';'
digging and cutting tools can carry harmful bacteria and . • -"
; ' ' i . : .
pathogens that could infett the tree. Use an aerosol anti-
bacterialspray ordiluted bleach.
-When trimming roots outside the TPZ* it is best to cut the
root with clean sharp saw with small teeth (Saws-all or '^
pruning saw) Any roots lager than 2" in diameter should
be inspected by a certified arborist,to determine if the
structure or health of the tree will be jeopardized.
*TPZ or Tree protection zone. Digging inside the tree protection zone should be done by hand to
minimize damage to the essential roots. Pulling roots with machinery can cause fractures in the main
trunk of the tree making the tree unstable and potentially a liability. When in doubt contact a Certified
Arborist to assess the area.
