EDC 05-21-03 City of Cupertino Economic Development Committee Regular Meeting May 21, 2003 1. CALL TO ORDER At 8:15 a.m. Carol Atwood called the meeting to order in Conference Room A, 10300 Torre Avenue, Cupertino. 2. ROLL CALL City Staff: Carol Atwood, Steve Piasecki, Ralph Qualls, David Knapp Chamber: Orrin Mahoney, Mark McKenna, Gilbert Wong City Council: Richard Lowenthal, Sandra James Absent: Dorothy Steenfott, Jody Hansen Guest: Keith Dias 3. NEW BUSINESS A. Master Developer Site Process Kirk Heindricks, City of Campbell, gave a very informative presentation on the Master Developer Site Process. Kirk discussed what constitutes a master developer site, the purpose of establishing one, the process itself and the advantages and disadvantages. The committee then asked questions in relation to the Valko Fashion Mall. (See attached outline.) 4. OLD BUSINESS A. Site Visits Steve Piasecki reported that the parking demand for BJ's has slowed down, thus decreasing the need for additional parking from the Apple site. Staff will continue to monitor the situation. Sandy James reported that Borland is moving ahead with their tenant improvements and plans on moving into the new office space in July. B. Cupertino Appreciation Day Carol Atwood reported that James Liu has agreed to sing the National Anthem. She will follow up with the Mayor to see if he will be throwing out the first pitch. Local Business Exit Interview Report McWhorters is closing and Steve Andrews is looking for a new tenant for the lease of approximately 23,000 square feet. Sandra James reported that she had heard that the business was undercapitalized from the beginning. D. Upcoming Ribbon Cutting Ceremonies There will be a ribbon cutting on June 5 at 11 :00 a.m. for Best Financial & Management Co, 10051 S. DeAnza Blvd. 5. MISCELLANEOUS COMMITTEE UPDATES A. Extended Stay America is reapplying to City Council on June 2. B. The Flames is looking at the old Carrow's site. C. HP is still trying to sell their land. D. Civic ParkITown Center was approved at the May 19 Council meeting. E. Dr. Jim Brown of Durect on Bubb Road will be our guest speaker next month discussing the success of his small business. 6.
