EDC 12-18-02 City of Cupertino Economic Development Committee Regular Meeting December 18, 2002 1. CALL TO ORDER At 8:09 a.m. Carol Atwood called the meeting to order in Conference Room A, 10300 Torre Avenue, Cupertino. 2. ROLL CALL City Staff: Carol Atwood, David Knapp, Steve Piasecki, Ralph Qualls, Dorothy Steenfott, Chamber: Jody Hansen, Orrin Mahoney City Council: Sandra James, Richard Lowenthal Guest: Alex Byer, Byer Properties, Planning Commissioner Gilbert Wong Absent: Keith Dias, Mark McKenna 3. NEW BUSINESS A. Local Developer Presentation Alex Byer, Byer Properties, updated the committee on the Crossroads Shopping Center remodel. He stated that the improvements were done during difficult economic times in order to renovate the aging center for future tenants and to give the center some longevity. He indicated that the improvement process went smoothly throughout the planning and building process. B. Extended Stay America Hotel Application Steve Piasecki reported that the hotel has submitted an application to build a 120 room hotel on the Santa Barbara Grill site. He stated that the application has been reviewed and modifications have been requested. The developer is expected to return to the Planning Commission in the first part of next year. Jody Hansen discussed the concerns of the hotel council regarding the addition of another hotel in the area during a depressed economy, Carol Atwood stated that it is not the City's role to limit competition. C. Business Retention Carol Atwood reported that the November new business license reports indicated that there were many home businesses started with only one retail business opening during the month. She also stated that Stacey's Bookstore has notified the city that they are closing the Cupertino store in February. December 18, 2002 Economic Development Meeting Page 2 4. NEW BUSINESS A. Key Development Activity Steve Piasecki reported that BJ. 's is now open and doing very well. He also updated the committee on various projects that are currently in progress throughout the city. B. Site Visits Carol Atwood reported that a meeting was held with Apple Computer on December 9. She also stated that Target has informed the city that they are not ab Ie to accept gifts of any kind from vendors. 5. ADJOURNMENT The meeting was adjourned at 9:48 a.m.
