EDC 02-17-99 City of Cupertino Economic Development Committee Regular Meeting February 17, 1999 1. CALL TO ORDER At 7:39 a.m. Carol Atwood called the meeting to order in Conference Room A, Cupertino City Hall, 10300 Torre Avenue. ROLL CALL 2. City Staff: Carol Atwood, Don Brown, Bob Cowan, Steve Dowling, Dorothy Steenfott, Bert Viskovich Chamber: Linda Asbury, Bill Jones, Donna Lawler City Council: Sandra James, John Statton Absent: Paula Davis 3. NEW BUSINESS A. Economic Summit The committee discussed doing an economic summit. It was suggested to have a more focused session related to the specific topic of strip center revitalizatiòn and then doing a summit with the shopping center owners regarding the outcome of the focused session. B. Internet Sales Tax Carol Atwood updated the committee on internet sales tax. She reported that the City is receiving internet sales tax from Symantec on items that are shipped within the state. She stated that tax cannot be collected on products shipped out of California or software that is downloaded directly to the client. Shopping Center Owner/Manager Meeting Update c. Bob Cowan reported that the meeting went well. He stated that the major outcome of the meeting was a suggestion to get all the brokers together to develop incentives for owners of older centers to invest in updating their centers. D. Sales Tax Update Carol Atwood reported that Apple Computer is still leading the top 40 sales tax producers. John Statton suggested that staff prepare a policy for an Internet Tax Incentive program. 4. OLD BUSINESS A. Status of Key Development Activity Vallco expansion is still under discussion. Don Brown reported that the developer for City Center is still interested in a boutique hotel and to complete the site with a long-term stay component and apartments. February 17, 1999 Economic Development Committee Page 2 B. Corporate ContactlKey Projects Updates Steve Dowling reported on a meeting he had with Bud Hoffman, owner/manger of Any Mountain. He stated that they'd like to have a permanent retail presence in Cupertino. 5. 6, MISCELLANEOUS COMMITTEE UPDATES ADJOURNMENT The meeting was adjourned at 8:45 a.m. ~y4,~
