I:was asked by Piu Ghosh,Planner, City of Cupertino,to make regular site visits to
inspect the trees at the Apple Campus 2 I'roject Site, located at Pruneridge and Tantau '

CIlIl1CllIlII llVllSll.IUIlICIl3,Il ',
For this site visit, I met Iavid 1Vluffly,Apple Arborist, who escorted me around the site
in an Apple vehicle, as there is very tight security. Only authorized persons are permitted
on the site.
I
IVIr.1Vluffly showed me the transplarited Coast Live Oak(Quercus agrifolia)trees# 1043, : '
1046, and 1112. The canopies of these trees fiave become very sparse. Trees# 1043 and
1046 exhibited vertical cracks in their bark, a common symptom of severe dehydration.
Mr.1Vluffly stated that the contracting company had not kept up with the watering to
these trees, but this had been corrected. The irrigation is currently intensified. However,
the terminal stems of the branches exhibited swollen buds, whicfi was an encouraging
sign.Perhaps Mr. 1Vluffly had caught the error and corrected it in time. The canopy die-
back to this point was minimal. The oniy thing to do was to continue the intensified
irrigation schedule and to wait.
Several of the transplanted Coast Redwood(Sequoia sempervirens)were showing slight
yellowing of the leaves, an initial symptom of drought stress. The irrigation to these had
also been intensified recently. I do not expect further decline.
All of the transplanted Ieodar cedars (Cedus deodaa) showed no symptoms of decline.
The large transplanted Valley Oak(Quercust lobata) # 1034 eibited a somewhat sparse
canopy, which was expected of the transplanting of a valley oak of this size. This tree had
begun to produce new terminal growth, which is a very good indication that the tree will
survive the transplanting in relatively good condition.

The planting of new trees has begun in those areas; in which site improvements have ;
been completed and no further improvemerits are planned. To this point, many '
: Englemann oak, Cathedral oak, andQuecus fainetto have been planted. Every specimen
observed was in exceptional condition.
naenaaans
I recommended to fertilize the struggling Coast live oak Trees# 1043, 1046, and 1112
with a slow release formula called Greenbelt 22-16-16 from Iomeo Packing Company,
Half Moon Bay. If these trees are capable of recovery, this should help tliem along. I
suggest that this be applied after the intense summer sunny period in late September or
October. This fertilizer remains available in the soil for uptake by the trees for 8-10
'months.

For this site visit; I met 1VIeg Thomas and David 1Vluffly,who escorted me around the site
in an Apple vehicle.
The,Coast live aak trees# 1043, 1046 and 1112 have put on some new leaves and appear
to have started making a recovery. The application of the fertilizer recommended for late
September or October should give them a boost.
There is a dense row of Canary Island Pine (Pinus canariensis), Coast Redwood(Sequoia l
_ sefnpervirens),and Ieodar Cedar(Cedus deodaa)trees adjacent to south side the
'property boundary along Freeway 20. A deep soil cut has;been done approximately at
the edge of the old parking lot in this area. The largest roots I observed in the face of the
soil cut were approximately 1/4 inch in diameter or smalfier. This root damage is minimal.
I do not expect any of these trees to die or severely decline;but it will be essential to
maintain regular irrigation to these trees.
Two 1Vlonterey Pine (Pinus Nadiata) Trees (#3309 and#2987), both on Tantau Avenue,
have died. It usually takes a year or more before the trunks would likely fall, but limbs
could be expected to fall any time. I consider this risk to be a significant hazard, partially
due to the fact that this section of Tantau Avenue is very busy. As a precaution, I
recommend that these two trees be removed as soon as possible.
The olive trees around the perimeter of the parking lot of the existing building RC3,
currently used as a construction headquarters, are in the process of being boxed for
transplant. These should all transplant very well.

IVew trees have been planted along Wolfe Road. The new trees consist of Englemann oak
(QueNcus englemannii),Valley oak(Quecus lobata) and Quercus castanifolia. Some of
the valley oak are a little sparse at this point, but they should recover quickly.
Rnnannanuans ,
I recommend that the dead 1Vlonterey pine Trees# 3309 and#2987 be removed as soon
as possible due to hazardous limb potentiaL
