SUBJECT: SIGN PROGRAM ACTION LETTER- Application S-2012-02:
This letter confirms the decision of the Director of Community Development, given on June 14,
2012, approving a sign program for the Gate of Heaven Cemetery located at 22555 Cristo Rey
Drive,with the following conditions:
1. APPROVED PROTECT
This approval is based on sign exhibits submitted as part of a plan set titled: "New Entry
Gates, Signage and Fencing" for Gate of Heaven Cemetery located at 22555 Cristo Rey Drive
prepared by Gonzales Architects dated March 16, 2012 and consisting of ten(10) sheets labeled A0.0,
topographic survey plan, A1.0, A2.0, A3.0, L-1, L-2, L-3, and L-4, and colored schematic design
sheet 3, except as may be amended by conditions in this resolution.
2. BUILDING PERMIT REQUIRED
This Sign Program approval does not constitute building permit approval. A building
permit is required for each separate sign indicated on the sign program unless the Building
Department determines that it is not necessary to obtain one.
3. MONUMENT SIGN IN PUBLIC RIGHT-OF-WAY
Prior to issuance of a building permit for the monument sign, the applicant shall obtain
approval by the Director of Public Works to install the monument sign in the public right-of-
way.
4. CHANGES TO SIGN PROGRAM
A new Sign Program application, for review and approval of the P1aruling Department, is
required prior to making any changes to the approved Sign Program.
5. ACCURACY OF THE PROTECT PLANS
The applicant/property owner is responsible to verify all pertinent property data including
but not limited to property boundary locations, building setbacks, property size, building
square footage, any relevant easements and/or construction records. Any misrepresentation
of any property data may invalidate this approval and require additional review.

6. CONSULTATION WITH OTHER DEPARTMENTS
The applicant is responsible to consult with other departments and/or agencies with regard
to the proposed project for additional conditions and requirements. Any misrepresentation
of any submitted data may invalidate an approval by the Community Development
Department.
7. NOTICE OF FEES, DEDICATIONS, RESERVATIONS OR OTHER EXACTIONS
The Conditions of Project Approval set forth herein may include certain fees, dedication
requirements, reservation requirements, and other exactions. Pursuant to Government
Code 5ection 66020(d) (1), these Conditions constitute written notice of a statement of the
amount of such fees, and a description of the dedications, reservations, and other exactions.
You are hereby further notified that the 90-day approval period in which you may protest
these fees, dedications, reservations, and other exactions, pursuant to Government Code
Section 66020(a), has begun. If you fail to file a protest within this 90-day period complying
with all of the requirements of Section 66020, you will be legally barred from later
challenging such exactions.
Staff has made all of the findings that are required for approval of a Sign Program as required
by the City of Cupertino Municipal Code, Section 19.104.130(C). Please be aware that if this
permit is not used within one year, it shall expire on June 14, 2013.
Please note that an appeal of this decision can be made within 14 calendar days from the date of
this letter. If this happens, you will be notified of a public hearing, which will be scheduled
before the Planning Comnlission.

To our neighbors,
On behalf of Gate of Heaven Catholic Cemetery, we are pleased to present a preview of a new small-scale
columbaria to be located at the center of the Cemetery grounds, as well as the new entry gate and signage that are
planned for the Cemetery. While these projects have little visual or other impact to our neighbors adjacent to the
cemetery property, William Sousae,the Director of Catholic Cemeteries,would like to share these plans with you
prior to submitting to the City of Cupertino for a building permit, and to provide you with the opportunity to share
comments or questions, if you wish to do so.
Entry Gates and Signage
The proposed new entry gates will replace the cemetery's existing gates and fencing, which consist of cyclone
fencing, a manually operated main vehicle gate, and a motorized secondary vehicle gate. As seen in the attached
rendering, we are proposing to replace the existing metal posts and gates with a pair of Mission style columns. The
columns and wall will have a plaster finish and the columns will be topped with a wood trellis structure. The
columns are approximately 10'-0"tall with the wood trellis extending 2'-6" above. In keeping with the existing, the
new gates,fencing, and side wall will be no more 8'-0"tall. A low, stone planter is proposed for the west side of the
gate, which will feature colorful plantings to accent the new sign wall. The existing manually operated main vehicle
gate will be replaced with a new motorized gate that will remain open during business hours.
Similar to the existing gate, the replacement gate is set well back from the property line and is located a
considerable distance from the main roadway(see detailed site plan). The new gate will remain approximately 45'-
0"from the main roadway at the existing property line, and will be minimally visible (around a curve and through the
existing trees) from the main road. Although, once seen, the new entrance will be much more welcoming in its
announcement of Gate of Heaven.
The existing motorized secondary gate will be replaced with a new motorized swing gate that will compliment the
new fencing and main vehicle gate. The existing cyclone fencing is to be replaced with wrought iron in the areas
surrounding the main and secondary gates.
The cemetery currently has a wood monument sign located at the corner of the main roundabout, which was
recently painted to increase visibility. The existing sign will be removed and replaced with a new, low scale sign
located on the existing center island of the Cemetery access road (see detailed site plan). The new sign will take its
cues from the existing residential signs within the roundabout, and will feature materials, such as plaster and stone,
that are in keeping with the cemetery's new entry gates.

Infinity Columbaria
The proposed Infinity Columbaria will be located adjacent to the larger of the cemetery's existing two lakes at the
heart of their property.This installation is conceived as two identical, mirrored half circles, each centered about an
existing tree. The two ares face in opposite directions symbolically referencing infinity, while the permeable
decomposed granite paths connect the two sections to complete the shape.
Each niche wall is proposed to slope from two niches (about 2'-6") high at the low end, to four niches (about 5'-0")
at the high side.The height of the two walls are being kept low to allow the new walls to blend with their
surroundings and nestle comfortably beneath the canopies of the existing trees and the planned landscaping
enhancements.
The walls will be clad on their front and back faces in granite, and will be accented with natural stone to match the
existing flagstone that borders the lake. Lush, native landscaping will be featured throughout to blend the installation
into its naturalistic surroundings.
The proposed Infinity Columbaria will be built in two phases with a single radial wall built in each phase. Gate of
Heaven plans to complete the entire installation within two to three years'time.
