CC Resolution No. 5911 ~ ~ ' RESOLUTION N0. 5911 ~ RESOLUTION OF TFiE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CUPERTINO SUPPORTING A REDUCTION IN NUCLEAR ARMS AND OTHER ACTIONS TO ENCOURAGE WORD PEACE WHEREAS, as the elected legislative body representing the interests oF the people of the City of Cupertino, the City Council is greatly concerned by an international climate that is increasing the possibility of intentional or accidental nuclear war; and WHEREAS, military Lns[allations and ma,jor businesses and industries within or ad,joining Cupertino are likely Cargets of an attack by a hostile nation in the event of war; and WHEREAS, present medical and scientific evidence showa tha[ nuclear war, even if "limited" in scale, would result in death, injury, and genetic disease on a acale unprecendented in human history; and WHEREAS, medical disaster planning for a nuclear was is virtually meaninglesa si~ce most hoapitals would be destroyed, most medical personnel dear or inSured, most supplies unavuilable, and many initial survivore would eventually die; and WHEREAS, the immediate and long term effects of nuclear war could lead to the extinction of the human species and the destruction of life on earth as it is now known; and WHEREAS, the City Council supports the recent effor[s of the President of the United States in taking the initiative in proposing reductione in the nuclear arsenal of both the United States and Soviet Union and the City Council aupports his call for the start of talks on strategic arms as early as June, 1982 without any pre-conditions; NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CUPERTINO DOES RESOLVE AS ~ FOI.LOWS : Section 1. The City Councii cails on the President and Congress of the United States to act immediately to reduce tensions between the United Statea and the Soviet llnion. Section 2. The City Council urges the governments of the Soviet Union and the United States [o ,join in a temporary suspension of nuclear arms production, while seeking a permanent, international nuclear weapons ban. Sec[ion 3. The City Council aupports efforts to initiate an ongoing educational program regarding the effecta oE nuclear war upon persone living and working in the City of Cupertino. ~ ~ Section 4. The City Council urgea upon our President, Congress, and all citizens a aense of crisis, and calls upon all such persons to act in this matter with equui sense of urgency.
