APPROVING CHANGE OF TITLE FRON PUBLIC WORKS SUPERVISOR TO
PUBLIC WORKS SUPERINTENDENT
WIIGRF.AS, the City of Cupertino has compared job duties of the Puhlic

~ On May 22, 1980, I reco~ended ~ob title changes for the Public Florks Supervisor,
and for the Administrative Services Officer to Asaistant to the City Hanager.
I did not recoimnend any change in job duties. As per your request, I have com-
pared the job duties of the Public Works Supervisor to Public Works Superintendent
in comparable citiea. (Generally, "Public Works Supervisor" relates to a working
foreman in other juriadictions.) Only one of the two job descriptions available
for the equivalent to the Assistant to the City Manager's position has been re-
ceived so that a comparison will follow this memo. Comparisons are summarized
herein for the Public Works Supervisor and followed by actual job 'specifications.
1. Citv of Cupertino - Public Works Supervisor
Job Duties: (1) Directs, plans, organizes and coordinates maintenance
divisions of the Public Works Department.
(2) Supervises subordinates.
(3) Controls budget expenditures.
(4) Schedules maintenance for all City vehicles.
Qualifications: (1) Graduation from High School.
Four years experience.
2. Los Altos - Public Works Superin[endent
1ob Duties (1) Plans and organizes streets, storm drains and seWers.
(2) Supervises Municlpal Service Center and Sewage
Treatmen[ Center and automotive mechanic duties.
(3) Controls budget expenditures.
Qualifications: (1) Graduacion from High School
(2) Five Years experience.

6. Union Citv - Public Services Superintenden[
Job Duties: (1) Organizes, assigns and supervises animal control,
vehicle maintenance, and stzeet maintenance.
(2) Supervises and trains.
Qualifications: (1) Graduation from High School.
(2) Seven years of experience.
In conclusion, I believe that the title, Public Works S~tp~incendent, Would
accurately refiect [he job duties of Cupertino's Public Works Supervisor in com-
parison with comparable citie~. ~
