RESOLUTION N0. 4377
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CUPERTINO
URGING OBSERVATION OF RULES TO ELIMINATE WATER WASTE
DURING 1977
WHEREAS, a city's water supply is an important foundation for jobs, health,
housing, recreation and fire safety; and
WHEREAS, the various water agencies of the Santa Clara Valley have, through
recent years, demonstrated a progressive and active program to ensure full and
safe water supplies to all its cities; and
WHEREAS, water being the keystone of ones living environment and life-style,
full support should be given not only to programs for water development, but
also for programs to prevent water waste and misuse; and
WHEREAS, the demand for water and the amount of water available for supply
has been severely affected by a continuing lack of average seasonal rainfall;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City of Cupertino hereby pro-
claims that 1977 be a year for public awareness and support for water conser-
vation in Santa Clara Valley;
FURTHER RESOLVED, that to continue our present life-style and to avoid
serious restraints on our use of water, the water users of Cupertino be strongly
urged to observe the following rules to eliminate water waste during 1977.
l. Avoid washing of sidewalks, driveways, filling station aprons, porches
and other outdoor services.
2. Avoid washing of the exterior of dwellings, buildings and structures
with the exception of window washing.
3. Ensure that ornamental fountains or any other structure making a use of
water employ a recirculating system.
4. Repair broken or defective plumbing, sprinkler, watering or irrigation
systems which permit the escape or leakage of water.
S. Avoid use of "the running hose" when washing automobiles, trucks, trailers,
trailer houses, boats and mobile homes. Commercial automobile washing
is permitted when water is recycled within an approved tolerance.
6. Limit outside watering to early morning and evening hours and adjust auto-
matic irrigation systems to changing weather conditions.
7. Encourage use of inside water saving devices (shower flow restrictors
and devices to lower toilet tank water volume).
8. Ensure full loads when washing dishes and clothes in the automatic washers.
9. All industrial and commercial water users are urged to evaluate their
water using procedures, eliminate water wastes, and observe good water
conservation practices including water recycling.
