NOVEMBER 19, 1996
CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at 7:30 P.M. by Chair Minow.

MINUTES
The minutes of the October 15, 1996 meeting were approved as written.
ORAL COMMUNICATIONS
A call was received from the Arts Commission giving information on grants for art in the
library. Commission discussed the possibility of some matching money from Friends of
the Library or other funding sources. The Commi~ion decided to seek some grant money
for art books and agendize the item for the December meeting.
WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS
None.
NEW BUSINESS
Susan Fuller distributed a report on the Bookmobile and discussion ensued about creative
ways to serve remote palxons. Ideas include computer kiosks and advertising dial-in-
service in Senior Centers.
Use of community_ room as group study room
Question was raised about whether community room could be used for group study.
Discussion ensued about ways space could be used and the possibility of glassing in room
for study use. Staff will report on use of community room and investigate alternate uses of
space.
Question was raised about the currency of the collection. The computer gives librarians
ways to sort by use and date.
California Library_ Association
Mary Minow and Susan Fuller reported on the conference. Special attention given to
programs on assessments and intellectual freedom. The Commission expressed strong
support for the County Library's policy of open access to all parts of the collection,
including the Web.
OLD BUSINESS
Commissioner Pow has been in discussion with city staff and Homestead High School
staff. Commission will agendize goals and objectives of Home Page for December
meeting.
Library Foundation
Low ticket sales forced cancellation of McNamara lecture.
Friends of the Library
Last book sale netted $8,900.
Mayor's Breakfast
Chair Minow reported on the breakfast.
Calendar Update and Planning
Elections will be scheduled.
