EDC 01-18-06 City of Cupertino Economic Development Committee Regular Meeting January 18, 2006 1. CALL TO ORDER At 9: 15 a.m. Carol Atwood called the meeting to order at Cupertino City Hall, Conference Room C, 10300 Torre Avenue, Cupertino. 2. ROLL CALL City Staff: Carol Atwood, David Knapp, Steve Piasecki, Ralph Qualls Chamber: Christine Giusiana, Shawna Holmes Council: Orrin Mahoney, Kris Wang Planning Commission: Absent Absent: Mark McKenna Guests: Gilbert Wong 3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Ralph Qualls moved to approve the minutes of the regular meeting of July 20,2005. Gilbert Wong seconded and motion passed unanimously with Mark McKenna absent. 4. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS None. 5. NEW BUSINESS A. 2006 Goals Carol Atwood asked for goals that the committee would want to tackle this year. She requested only items that could be accomplished by both the Chamber and the City. 1. The City will commit to expansion of an economic development website as part of the E-Services project. This will include GIS mapping, available real estate, visual drive through and search engines for demographics, business proximities, and other data. 2. The Chamber will discuss/decide if they want to pursue promotion of available meeting spaces in Cupertino. Shawna Holmes will follow up. 3. The Chamber will discuss/decide if they want to pursue sign ordinance changes. Carol Atwood will provide a summary of current sign violations. Shawna Holmes will follow up with the Chamber decision. Local Business Exit Interview Report Christine Giusiana stated that several businesses have left due to economics or retirements. B. Upcoming Ribbon Cutting Ceremonies None. The Chamber is concentrating on mixers and new programs. C. Upcoming Development Hearings Gilbert Wong stated that the following projects are in the que: 1/24/06 Planning Commission - Marketplace and Taylor Woodrow 1/26/06 Planning Commission - Toll Brothers 1/30/06 City Council- Vallco Condos 2/7/06 City Council - Toll Brothers 7. CURRENT DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITY Steve Piasecki reviewed the current development activity. Discussion centered on Whole Foods and Vallco. 8. MISCELLANEOUS COMMITTEE UPDATES It was noted that Mahesh Nihalani is actively recruiting Indian business. Kris Wang noted that the City is running forums on identity theft and crime issues. She suggested that the Chamber might want to advertise these presentations for their mixers. 9. ADJOURNMENT The meeting was adjourned at 10:35 a.m. ~~ Carol Atwood Director of Administrative Services
