SUBJECT AND ISSUE
Council consideration of the Request by the Cupertino Historical Society to acquire and
install a small plaque in the Redwood Memorial Grove behind the Cupertino Public
Library to commemorate the founding of the City in 1955.
BACKGROUND
Staff was approached by Mr. John Kolski representing the Cupertino Historical Society
with a proposal to place a plaque in the Redwood Memorial Grove behind the Cupertino
Library. According to Mr. Kolski, the plaque would be to commemorate the founding of
the City of Cupertino and the first City Council who were seated as the founders in 1955.
Mr. Kolski represented that the plaque would be acquired at no cost to the City and with
the approval of the City Council, City staff would install the plaque at a suitable location
in the Grove. The location, format content, and materials of the plaque would be subject
to the review and approval of the Director of Public Works. The Historical Society
proposes to acquire the plaque and have it placed in time to be dedicated at the Annual
Cupertino Anniversary Jubilee scheduled for September 16-17, 2006. The wording of the
plaque would be consistent with the following:
"In recognition of the first City Council October 1955
Ralph Lindenmeyer, Mayor
Warner Wilson, Vice Mayor Ivan Meyerholz, Council member
Clyde Saich, Council member Norman Nathanson, Council member
Dedicated by the Cupertino Historical Society
September 16, 2006"
The City's practice for the placement of plaques of a general commemorative nature has
been to first acquire the approval of the City Council. In addition, the approval of the
Director of Public Works is required to ensure that the plaque conforms with and
complements the general surroundings of the City facility in which it is placed. It is
expected that the plaque would be similar in nature to that installed by the Cupertino
Rotary Club in the grove of trees in the Civic Center Plaza.

FISCAL IMPACT

base and install the plaque to be purchased by others.
