United Way Silicon Valley is launching 2-1-1 Santa Clara County, a toll-free calling code set aside for the public for health and human service referrals and disaster assistance. It's a 24/7 call center hotline and public website connecting people who need assistance with those who can help. . 2-1-1 enables people to get or give help. 2-1-1 offers information on a broad range of services. including housing and shelter assistance. financial literacy, child and elder care. after school programs. and mental health and other health resources. 2-1-1 call centers can connect volunteers to community projects. and in-kind item donations to agencies where their gifts may be best utilized. . 2-1-1 enhances public safety and crisis recovery efforts. From earthquakes and floods to bio-terrorism and pandemics. 2-1-1 call centers are the logical platform for building emergency response communication capacity. . 2-1-1 brings money back into the local community. Last year. one call center made 741 referrals to free income tax preparation services. These services represented $940.000 in tax returns to their customers. and revenue generated back into the community's economy. . United Way Silicon Valley is prepared to launch a full-service 2-1-1 system in February 2007. An estimated 40.000 calls are expected the first year.
