October 2026 Library Report
Jennifer Weeks, County Librarian
Getting Ready to Fill the Nest
The Santa Clara County Library District has a brand-new structure located next to the Services &
Support Center in Campbell. The Nest: Learning Center is the new home for our Reading Program,
which helps adults across the County improve their literacy skills.
The building was designed with nature in mind, leveraging the view of
the percolation ponds located behind the building. Environmental
panels around the facility describe the wildlife found around the nearby
ponds, and the eco-friendly features designed into the building
including bird-safe glass, Corten steel, and dark sky lighting. These
features protect both the environment as well as the local wildlife.
These same panels serve a second purpose. They are designed to be
used as a learning tool for Reading Program learners who visit the building. An accompanying webpage
is available with a glossary and activities on each topic to practice their English learning skills.
The new community room, named the Howe Room is dedicated to
Nancy Howe, who served as SCCLD’s seventh County Librarian
from 2012-2020. There are also several meeting rooms which will
facilitate Reading Program activities as well as tutors meeting one-
on-one with their learners.
The Nest is expected to be fully operational by the end of October.

Beyond the Margins: Centering
Filipino American Histories
The community is the third largest Asian
origin group in the U.S. and second largest
in California, though Filipino Americans are
not always recognized for their important
contributions to our national life. A blog post
will be available on Thursday, October 1.
This year’s theme for Filipino American History Month focuses on the many ways in which the
community intersects with other groups historically, from the farm labor movement of the 1960s,
religious diversity across Christian and Muslim faiths, and the multiracial identities of celebrities like
Olivia Rodrigo, Bruno Mars, H.E.R., and Darren Criss, who all share Filipino ancestry.
Several of our libraries have programming scheduled. Local Filipina American singer-songwriter Kira
Hooks will perform a globally informed mix of soul, jazz, R&B and folk at the Los Altos (Sat., Oct. 3),
Cupertino (Sun., Oct. 4), and Saratoga (Sat., Oct. 10) libraries. Kids 5-12 can make their own Jeepney
colorful transports at the Gilroy Library on Wed., Oct. 14. Adults are invited to join a paint party inspired
by Pacita Abad at the Morgan Hill Library on Sat., Oct. 24.
FYI- All SCCLD libraries will be closed on Monday, October 12
for Indigenous People’s Day. Our Online Library will be open.

Your Vote is Your Voice- Use It!
The November 3 General Election is around the corner.
Four SCCLD locations will be hosting 4-day early voting
sites- the Cupertino, Saratoga, and Milpitas libraries. Details
are included on the graphic below and on the County
Registrar of Voters’ website. There you can also find
locations of all ballot drop off sites, which includes all our
libraries. Voting officials encourage everyone to vote early this year over concerns about mail delivery
times, and if possible, to use an official drop box.
Interested in learning more about the items on the ballot? The State Secretary of State has a Voter
Information Guide in multiple languages. The League of Women Voters publishes their own guide
