CUPERTINO BUSINESS PEOPLE AND FORMER RESIDENTS
FRED AND ANNIE CHAN DONATE $325,000 FOR NEW MARINE AQUARIUM
Who: Cupertino business people and former residents, Fred and Annie Chan, will present a
check for $325,000 to Mayor Michael Chang and Vice Mayor Sandra James for a spectacular
marine aquarium that will be housed in the new Cupertino Library.
What: With the donation, the City of Cupertino will install a 3,800-gallon marine aquarium in a
prominent location in the new, state-of-the-art, Cupertino Library. Fred Chan says he has had an
interest in aquariums and marine life since he was a child and plans to honor his father’s memory
with this donation. A recognition plaque will state, “This marine aquarium was made possible by
the contribution of Fred and Annie Chan and their family, in loving memory of Mr. Pak Chung
Chan.”
The Library design team consists of Bart Fenolio of Dolphin Design, the County Library staff,
SMWM Architects of San Francisco and Tenji Associates, an aquarium consultant group
affiliated with the Monterey Bay Aquarium. The City staff is also attempting to develop a
collaborative educational program between the Cupertino Library Aquarium and the Monterey
Bay Aquarium.
The Cupertino Library is scheduled to open in October 2004. An Artist’s rendering of the marine
aquarium will be on display.
