MEETING HELD IN TEE CONFERENCE 1XM 160 - 170 AT TEMPORARY CITY HALL AT 10430 S. DE ANZA BLVD., QJPERTINO, CALIFORNIA. The meeting was called to order at 7:02 PM by Criairwaman Mann who led the pledge of allegiance. ITEM 1) APPLICATION ASAC 51 724.1 -- OAKS SHOPPING CEN'T'ER: Requesting approval of a change of copy color for an existing ground sign for the Oaks Shopping Center. Located at the northwest corner of Stevens Creek Boulevard and Mary Avenue. ITEM 2) APPLICATION 22-U-87 -- TANDEM CCM S: Requesting approval final site and landscaping plans for modifications to two existing industrial buildings located generally at the northwest corner of Highway 280 and Tantau Avenue. - 1 - ASAC SUMMARY NINUI'FS -- REGULAR MEETING OF JUNE 22, 1987 PAGE -2- ITEM 3) APPLICATION ASAC 51,719.1 -- UEV1DN U.S.A. Requesting approval of a new grourxi sign for an existing service station located at the northwest corner of S. Saratoga -Sunnyvale Road and Prospect Road. ITEM 4) APPLICATION ASAC 51,721.1 -- CHEVRON U.S.A. Requesting approval to construct a new grout sign and retain an existing price sign for an existing service station located at the southwest corner of Stevens Creek Boulevard and De Anza Boulevard. PRESEN'T'ATION: Kandee Bahmani, Applicant DISCUSSION: With the Applicant's consent, the Committee agreed to hear Items 3 and 4 concurrently. Following the applicant's presentation, the committee could find no demonstrable relationship between the sign's proposed height and traffic safety. Committee members expressed concern about the price display copy size limitations contained in the newly-amerxied Sign Code. Several members found the display limitations unduly restrictive in legibility or motorists. DECISION: In accordance with the Applicant's request, the Conunittee voted to continue Item 3 & 4 to the regular meeting of July 13, 1987. The Applicant was directed to redesign in accordance with a monument format. However, copy size may exceed the Ordinance - specified ininimzn, based on each site's location in a Planned Development district. ITEM 5) APPLICATION ASAC 51,720.1 -- DES HUNTER (CAL -NEON SI(NS): Requesting approval of an exception to a previously approved retail center sign program for an individual tenant wall sign. Retail center located at the southwest corner of De Anza Boulevard and McClellan Road at 10528 S. De Anza Boulevard. PRESE NATION: Craig Maynard, Sign Consultant DISCUSSION: Staff noted that the height of the proposed copy exceeds the approved sign program specification by about 6 inches. The applicant stated that the sign message elements were arranged in stacked rather than linear format; the tenant frontage is broken into irregular planes by a projecting entry feature. MemberChapman proposed an interpretation which f l r s that the individual elements of the sign message are consistent with the sign program dimensional constraints. Stacking of the individual components is necessary to ac c date an unusual architectural feature; therefore, the sign is consistent with approved sign program. Other Committee Members agreed with this interpretation. CONTINUED TO ASAC MEETING OF JULY 13, 1987. ITEM 7) APPLICATION ASAC 51 723.1 -- CRUISE HOLIDAYS (TOM WILLYouNG) Requesting approval of a modification to an existing ground sign for an office building located at the southwest corner of Bubb Road and Stevens Creek Boulevard. 21580 Stevens Creek Boulevard. PRESENTATION: Tom Willyoung, Applicant DISCUSSION: Staff suggested that the sign face be modified to emphasize the street address and reduce the letter size by 50% for the tenant message. Member Nobel questioned the need for the "Stevens Creek Blvd." portion of the display, and suggested that the street number alone be emphasized. The applicant requested that the Cruise Holiday message remain at the proposed 611 letter height. The Committee proposed that the tenant copy be reduced to 411 in height and that greater separation be provided between the tenant copy and address display. DECISION: i • • • i 1 •! LEE ASSOCIATES): Requesting informal approval of a final landscape plan for an existing service station located at the northwest corner of De Anza Boulevard and Homestead Road. 11025 N. De Anza Boulevard. DISCUSSION: Staff explained the intent of Condition 6(A) and (B) of Use Permit 6-U-87 which is basically a restoration effort for the most publicly visible portions of the site. The Committee concurred with the staff's analysis of color and height variation acceptable, and found the proposed Planting Plan acceptable. ITEM 9) NIN==ES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF JUNE 8, 1987 DECISION: BY A VOTE OF 4-0, ttTIEE APPROVED MINUTES OF JUNE 8, 1987 AS PUBLISHED. Having concluded its business, the Architectural and Site Approval Committee adjourned at 8:34 PM to July 13, 1987 at 7:00 PM in Conference Roam 160 - 170 of Temporary City Hall at 10430 S.
