February 2026 Library Report
Jennifer Weeks, County Librarian
Marking A Century of Black
History Commemorations
This year’s Black History Month marks
the 100-year-anniversary of Negro
History Week, the original celebration of
the contributions of Black Americans to
our country. 2026 is also the half century
anniversary of the expansion to a
month-long recognition. Our libraries are
offering events to mark the occasion.
Mr. Boom Boom is back with his African Drum Circle on Feb. 28 at the Los Altos, Cupertino, and
Morgan Hill Libraries. Learn about percussion instruments from around the world, with a focus on West
Africa. Children are invited to play them in this interactive session. Saratoga Library patrons can learn
more about African drumming from master musician Onye Onyemaechi on Feb. 15.
Two of this month’s Virtual Author Talks feature African American authors writing about parts of Black
history (see article on page 3 of this report). We will have a blog post with suggested readings for
children and adults.
Silicon Valley Reads Month One
All Silicon Valley Reads events are now
posted on the official website. These include
over 200 author visits and book talks, music,
movies and performances, plus events for
kids and teens, at libraries across the county.
SCCLD libraries have more than two dozen
offerings for all ages, including many craft
events, book discussions and watercolor painting sessions for adults and teens. Pokémon Go trainers
won’t want to miss the Cupertino Library’s event on Sat., Feb. 21. Check out SCCLD’s Silicon Valley
Reads page for more details, including links to our catalog for the companion and children’s book
selections.

Read for the Record Turns 20
Jumpstart's Read for the Record is turning 20 on
Feb. 26, following a 20-week-long nationwide
celebration of beloved children’s books that
started last October. Read for the Record is touted
as the world’s largest shared reading experience,
promoting early literacy as millions read the same
book on the same day. The final title for the week
of the anniversary is See Marcus Grow by
Marcus Bridgewater. Celebrate with our libraries on Thu., Feb. 26, as they hold events around the day
with storytimes in the morning, afternoon and evening to read See Marcus Grow. Come join the fun!
Celebrating the Year of the
Fire Horse at our Libraries
San José’s own Buu Kim Tu Dragon
& Lion Dance Association will bring
their magical performances to six of
our libraries leading up to the Lunar
New Year on Tuesday, February 17.
Events take place on Sat., Feb. 7,
Sun., Feb. 8, and Sat., Feb. 14. Times
vary. Come early to secure a spot.
Learn about Traditional and Modern Vietnamese dancing at a trio of library events on Sat., Feb. 21
(Morgan Hill at 12 PM and Milpitas at 3 PM) and Sun., Feb. 22 (Los Altos at 11 AM). Experience the
beauty of Vietnamese culture through a vibrant mix of traditional and modern dance. The
performance invites audiences to learn a short Vietnamese dance using props like conical hats or fans.
Vietnamese dance carries a long tradition of storytelling, rhythm, and community connection. This
program highlights that heritage through a mix of classical forms and modern interpretations, offering a
look at how the art continues to evolve. The choreography reflects both the grace of traditional
movement and the creativity found in contemporary styles.
Find a full schedule of Lunar New Years events in our monthly calendar later in this report, and online.
FYI- All SCCLD libraries will be closed on Monday, February 16 for
the Presidents’ Day holiday. Find us 24/7 at our Online Library.
