HomeMy WebLinkAboutTC 11-12-2025 MinutesMINUTES CUPERTINO TEEN COMMISSION Wednesday, November 12, 2025 At 6:00 p.m. Chair Anushree Misra called the regular Teen Commission meeting to order at the Quinlan Conference Room, 10185 North Stelling Road and via teleconference. ROLL CALL Chair Anushree Misra, Vice Chair Harly Liu, and Commissioners Rusheel Deshmukh, Jonathan Gao, Saanvi Halambi (arrived at 6:02 p.m.), Sumedha Kumar, Chelsea Lau, Vinay Prakash, and Brianna Su (arrived at 6:04 p.m.). Absent: None. CEREMONIAL MATTERS AND PRESENTATIONS 1.Subject: Outdoor Recreation Division Recommended Action: Receive a presentation on the Outdoor Recreation Division from Kayla Nakamoto, Recreation Coordinator. Recreation Coordinator Kayla Nakamoto gave a presentation. Commissioners asked questions, which staff responded to. Chair Misra opened the public comment period, and seeing no one, closed the public comment period. 2.Subject: Youth Led Organization, Tino Eco Recommended Action: Receive a presentation from Youth Led Organization, Tino Eco, for Teen Commission Highlight Program. Representative from Youth Led Organization Tino Eco, Megha Vinesh, gave a presentation. Commissioners asked questions, which the presenter responded to. Chair Misra opened the public comment period, and seeing no one, closed the public comment period. Teen Commission Minutes November 12, 2025 APPROVAL OF MINUTES 3.Subject: Approval of Minutes - October 8, 2025 Recommended Action: Review and approve the minutes from the Teen Commission meeting on October 8, 2025. Chair Misra opened the public comment period, and seeing no one, closed the public comment period. MOTION: Liu moved and Lau seconded to approve the October 8, 2025 minutes. The motion carried with the following vote: Ayes: Misra, Liu, Deshmukh, Gao, Halambi, Kumar, Lau, Prakash, Su. Noes: None. Abstain: None. Absent: None. POSTPONEMENTS – None ORAL COMMUNICATIONS – None OLD BUSINESS – None NEW BUSINESS 4.Subject: Active Transportation Plan Recommended Action: Receive a presentation and provide feedback on the Active Transportation Plan from Matt Schroeder, Transit and Transportation Planner. Transit and Transportation Planner Matt Schroeder gave a presentation. Commissioners asked questions, which staff responded to. Chair Misra opened the public comment period, and seeing no one, closed the public comment period. 5.Subject: Evaluation of Tino Eco for Second Highlight Spot Recommended Action: Discuss and vote on Tino Eco Youth Led Organization for second Teen Commission Highlight spot. Recreation Manager Sonya Lee gave a presentation. Commissioners asked questions and made comments, which staff responded to. Commissioners made the following recommendations: Teen Commission Minutes November 12, 2025 •Make the Highlight Program more selective. •Offer more than a simple shout-out—such as a City-issued certificate or endorsement—to encourage greater participation. •Enhance the overall appeal of applying for the Highlight Program. •Limit eligibility to once per year to prevent repeat selections of the same organization. •Conduct a more thorough evaluation process by the Commission. •Increase outreach efforts, with Teen Commissioners actively promoting the Highlight opportunity. •Prioritize first-time applicants or newer organizations to support emerging youth-led efforts. Chair Misra opened the public comment period, and seeing no one, closed the public comment period. MOTION: Liu moved and Su seconded to set a precedent to allow applications once every year since the last Teen Commission Highlight. Ayes: Misra, Liu, Deshmukh, Gao, Halambi, Kumar, Lau, Prakash, Su. Noes: None. Abstain: None. Absent: None. Recreation Manager Sonya Lee gave a presentation. Commissioners asked questions and made comments, which staff responded to. Su moved and Prakash seconded not to give Tino Eco Youth Led Organization a second Teen Commission Highlight spot. The motion carried with the following vote: Ayes: Misra, Liu, Deshmukh, Gao, Halambi, Kumar, Lau, Prakash, Su. Noes: None. Abstain: None. Absent: None. 6.Subject: December Teen Commission Meeting Recommended Action: Discuss and provide feedback on possible cancellation of the December Teen Commission meeting. Recreation Manager Sonya Lee gave a presentation. Commissioners asked questions and made comments, which staff responded to. Chair Misra opened the public comment period, and seeing no one, closed the public comment period. MOTION: Lau moved and Liu seconded to cancel the December meeting. The motion carried with the following vote: Ayes: Misra, Liu, Deshmukh, Gao, Halambi, Kumar, Lau, Teen Commission Minutes November 12, 2025 Prakash, Su. Noes: None. Abstain: None. Absent: None. STAFF AND COMMISSION REPORTS Sonya Lee reported on recent and upcoming Parks and Recreation events. The Teen Speaker Series continues with sessions on Financial Literacy (Nov. 15) and Tech Career Paths (Nov. 22). December events include the Tree Lighting at Quinlan on Dec. 5, followed by Breakfast with Santa on Dec. 6, both of which need volunteers. Cupertino Café, a teen study event, will be held on Dec. 13 at Community Hall, along with the Signing Santa program that morning. Santa Visits will run Dec. 13–15 and Dec. 20–22, with limited spots remaining. Recent events included a highly attended Diwali Festival, the Ikebana Flower Show, the Treasures sale benefiting the Senior Center, and the popular Monster Mash. The Teen Speaker Series’ college planning session on Nov. 1 drew more than 20 participants. Teen commissioners also received recognition at the CREST Awards on Oct. 29. Commissioners asked questions which Recreation Manager Sonya Lee responded to. Chair Misra opened the public comment period, and seeing no one, closed the public comment period. FUTURE AGENDA SETTING – Analyzing the current Teen Commission Highlight Program and the benefits awarded by the program (Misra).
