CITY OF CUPERTINO TAKING A LOOK BACK
WHAT'S HAPPENED IN THE LAST MONTH?
Cupertino Spelling Bee
On Saturday, January 12 the City of Cupertino
hosted its second annual Spelling Bee for 4th - 6th
graders. Twenty-five students came from across
different Cupertino schools and engaged in a
fierce, educationally enriching competition for
the honorary title of the Cupertino Spelling Bee
champion. After 30 intense rounds, 6th grader
Sriya Pidaparthi was crowned champion with the
winning word 'hibiscus', and 5th grader Shivansh
Kelkar being named the runner-up. The full video
production of the Cupertino Spelling Bee may be
found at the City's YouTube channel: youtube.com/
cupertinocitychannel.
Sports Center and Teen
Center Open House
The Cupertino Sports Center and Teen Center held
their annual Open House on Saturday, January 12.
Over 350 community members took part in free fit-
ness classes, tours, gifts, Wheel of Fun, discounts on
memberships, and face painting for the kids. The
Cupertino Tennis Club was there promoting the United
States Tennis Association (USTA). Over 40 people
checked out the Teen Center, which was open for
tours, snacks, games, and a Python workshop present-
ed by TechLab Education. The morning ended with a
raffle that included passes to Golfland, Sky High, San
Jose Giants tickets, and Sports Center memberships.
Youth Activity Board Kickoff
On Sunday, January 13 Cupertino's inaugural
members of the Youth Activity Board (YAB), a newly

and the Teen Commission, participated in their
Kickoff Social and engaged in an escape room
activity designed to begin building the collaborative

Household Hazardous Waste
Learn how to properly dispose of those items that don't
seem to go into your day-to-day waste receptacles
Wonder what to do with items like batteries, compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs), used cooking or motor oil, or
old chemicals and cleaners?
Batteries and CFLs can be placed in a sealed, clear plastic bag beside your recycling cart on your collection
day. First, tape both battery terminals using masking, electrical, or duct tape to reduce fire risk. These items
can also be recycled at Environmental Recycling and Shredding
r Events(cupertino.org/environmentalday) or through the door -to-
do or hazardous waste program.
Used cooking and motor oil can also be recycled curbside.
Simply contain oil in sealed plastic jugs and oil filters in sealed
plastic bags and place next to carts on collection day.
Chemicals, cleaners, pesticides, fertilizers, paints, and other
hazardous waste can be collected from your door at no
additional cost using Cupertino's Door -to -Door Household
Hazardous Waste Program. Call (800) 449-7587 or visit
wmatyourdoor.com to schedule an appointment.

The City of Cupertino's Fine Arts Commission is pleased to
announce these three Cupertino residents as winners of the
2018-2019 Emerging Artist Award. The purpose of the Fine
Arts Commission is to foster and encourage artistic expres-
sion and achievement in the fields of visual, verbal, and
performing arts while preserving and advancing the arts for
the benefit of the citizens of Cupertino. Each year the Com-
mission presents awards to deserving artists in recognition of
local talent in these fields.
The Emerging Artist Award was established to encourage
and recognize demonstrations of artistic promise. This award
recognizes younger artists as well as those rediscovering
their love of artistic expression later in life. Judging criteria
included evidence of imagination and individuality as well
as effective use of media and tools to create a work of
personal expression.
And the winners are...

Are You Flood Ready?
Flood Safety Tips to Prepare You and Your Family
....................................................................................................................................................................... .
Residents along creeks are the most susceptible to floods, especially those properties in known flood hazard
zones. Cupertino has experienced floods in the past and certain properties within Cupertino have received
damage due to flooding. Cupertino is not immune to climate change, so it's important to prepare for floods
and other extreme weather conditions in order to protect and ensure the safety of your family.
Prepare a family emergency plan
and emergency kit for your home
and your car.
Have an evacuation route to high
2 ground to avoid floodwaters and
designate a safe meeting spot for
your family.
Sign up for AlertSCC, Santa Clara
County's emergency notification
system and download ReadySCC,
an emergency preparedness app.
Register here alertscc.com.
Know the locations of your neigh-
4 borhood streams and drainage
channels. Monitor streams with the
water district's Flood Watch Tool:
https://gis.valleywater.org/SCVWD
Floodwatch.
Don't walk or drive in flooded areas.
Six inches of moving water can
make you fall; and a foot of water
will cause vehicles to float away.
To report a spill, dumping or
blockage in storm drains which can
6result in localized street flooding,
call (408) 777-3269 or (408) 299-
2507 (after hours). You can also call
the local floodplain manager at
(408) 777-3354.
The Cupertino Service Center
located at 10555 Mary Avenue,
provides sandbags to residents
free of charge. For a list of addi-
tional locations and tips on proper
sandbag usage, including addi-
tional safety tips for your home, visit
